What led you to make a career as a makeup artist? How and when did you start?
I started in 2006. Pursuing a career in make-up was against the wishes of my family. Since childhood, I have been attending various beauty pageants like Miss India as my father was in the liquor business. Being backstage, it was fascinating to see all the beauty and glamour. This fascination led to choosing a career in make-up. I did my first course in make-up in the year 2006.
I began my career under the guidance of Bollywood make-up artist Baba Mero. After a few stints with other make-up artists, I decided to take the plunge to start my own label – ‘Niti Luthra’.
What were your initial challenges when you started and what are the ones that you face now?
Initially, there were not many challenges but it gets very difficult to prove our work, especially with the photographers. Gradually everything works. At present, every new face and/or every new assignment is a challenge. One has to understand the needs and demands of the client and do justice to the desired look.
What are the makeup trends for this season?
The trends that were big on the runway this year are:
1.Bold eye shadows: Bold and bright colours like yellow, purple, orange and red were seen on the runway. Yellow eye shadow is the colour of the season.
2. Smudged liners and glitter: A smudged look acquired by gel eyeliners to get the smoky eye look has been trending. Bold eyeliners paired with crystals/ glitters on the eyelids has been spotted on the runways a lot.
3. Dramatic eyes: Eyes are given special attention this season. The dramatic eye looks comprise rings of purple, red and blue around the lash line are in vogue.
4. Metallic bronze-y look: When it comes to the face make-up, the metallic bronzy look was seen a lot on the runway. This look is a combination of silver inner eyes, metallic eye shadows, glowing cheeks and metallic lips.
5. Berry lips: Deep, vampy purples and wine-hued reds from the berry lip shades family has made a comeback. These shades were seen paired with neutral eye shadows — smoky charcoal greys, bronze, browns, or golds, which really load up on the lashes.
What are your plans?
My future plans are all about doing more weddings and events and working with international clients. I have also started my make-up academy ‘Niti Luthra Makeup Academy,’ based in Noida and Chandigarh. I aspire to run the academy in more efficient ways and create international associations for the same.
