What do body wraps do to your body?

Touted as one of the most luxurious beauty treatments, body wraps are an effective way to enhance the health and appearance of the skin. Given their countless benefits and lasting effectiveness, body wraps are a staple at spas these days.

A unique blend of mineral-rich clay and professional body wrapping techniques help cleanse the body and draw out toxins. Most spas offer a few core body wrap treatments such as slimming, detoxifying, relaxing and hydrating.

Arti Vaid, Vice President at Levo Spalon, says, “A wrap is a nourishing cocoon designed to slim and tone your body, hydrate, cleanse or heal your skin, or relax and soothe your muscles. Body wraps combine therapeutic masks — herbal pastes, mineral-rich muds or soothing creams — with thermal coverings. The body mask will contain a mixture of ingredients designed to have a remedial effect on your skin, while the coverings will swathe and warm your body, promoting muscle relaxation, and sweating to cleanse your pores.”

How body wraps work?

The vast majority of wraps comprise moisturising ingredients to hydrate, nourish and smooth your skin for improved quality. The pampering experience of a body wrap can provide multiple benefits, depending on the type chosen detox, skin tightening, hydrating or slimming, etc.

Swati Gupta, Director – Capability at BodyCraft Spa & Salon, shares, “A nourishing oil or mineral-rich formula is applied to the guest’s limbs and torso before they are wrapped in cotton, mylar bandages or a plastic film. This promotes the extraction of dirt, toxins and excess water from the skin. And once the client is fully wrapped by the esthetician, they are left alone to relax and sweat for about 20 minutes. This provides valuable and rare mental and physical downtime to the clients.”

What a spa should know before offering body wraps?

Arti Vaid says, “Spa therapists should be aware of the skin/ body type and the exact requirement of the customer. And, they should be able to help the customer with comfort during treatment. Check with their demand of music if they are unable to drift off to sleep.”

While Swati Gupta points out that a body wrap is a service that confines the guest for anything between 20 to 30 minutes, hence it should only be recommended after a in-depth medical history check-up.Guests who may be claustrophobic, or have other medical issues should not be advised for this treatment.

Body wraps can also be recommended to those looking to boost to their weight loss plan or an overall detox enhancement. The service will greatly favour the results for someone who is in the middle of a super healthy diet.

Points to ponder over

A body wrap by itself does not include a massage — it’s a nutrient rich pack chosen based on desired result, so there’s no question of pressure application cautions Swati. However, for an all-out luxury experience, she suggests opting for BodyCraft’s signature treatment that includes a thorough cleansing of the skin with a gentle exfoliation to remove the dead skin and cleanse the pores of any impurities followed by a relaxing massage that also prepares the body to receive the goodness of the nourishing pack, that is followed by a shower. Rejuvenating isn’t it!
