Be Holi-ready with these hair and skin care tips

by Arun Shirishkar

Dr. Shuba Dharmana, Dermatologist at the Lejeune Medspa, Hyderabad, dishes out tips to keep your hair and skin looking healthy and happy this Holi.

No matter how organic, holi colours, in combination with exposure to the sun, can leave the hair and skin looking dull and damaged. Take heart and add colour to your life with these pre- and post-holi tips.

Pre-Holi routine
Coat your hair with a few drops of almond oil, so that the colours do not penetrate the hair shaft. For the face, use a moisturising lotion and top it with with SPF sunscreen >30. Apply a good body lotion or cream. Rub a generous amount onto areas such as elbows and knees, which are more prone to dryness. Protect your lips by applying petroleum jelly or a good lip balm. A nourishing cuticle oil or sweet almond oil will work well for the nails.

Post-Holi routine
Holi aftercare includes cleansing your face with an oil-based cleaner. Massage gently in upward and circular strokes with wet fingertips. Next, moisturise your skin and apply sunscreen. Slather a dollop of moisturising lotion all over the body post shower. Hydrate the cuticles with petroleum jelly and the pout with a moisturising lip balm.

Wash your hair thoroughly and follow it up with a deep conditioner or a hair mask. You can make your own deep conditioning hair mask by mixing ripe avocado with a tablespoon of olive oil and honey. Apply the blend to your hair and let it sit for about 40 minutes. You may use a shower cap for better penetration of the mask. Later, rinse off well with shampoo and conditioned again. Avoid using heat styling tools for a day.
