Makeup was seen as a girls-only pursuit but not anymore. These gender-breaking beauty pioneers have significantly changed the whole game over the years and have made it the new normal.

For generations, makeup has been seen as a “girls-only” enterprise. In the beauty business, as we have known, beauty products have been sold to men for decades, but they were often and quite always repackaged under the title of “grooming,” just to make it seem more masculine.

Even though this concept of genderless beauty is hardly new, for the first time in centuries, men wearing makeup is not completely taboo like it was before. Thanks to social media and the emergence of male beauty influencers like James Charles and Bretman Rock. Now, beauty/makeup is in the stages of becoming more gender-inclusive as time goes by.

Let’s look at some of the most influential gender-breaking beauty pioneers:

Cha Eun-woo, Dior Beauty Brand Ambassador

K-pop band Astro’s Cha Eun-woo, standing at 6ft with incredible visuals, has emerged as an ambassador powerhouse in recent years. He has constantly ranked high among the most impactful celebrities in Korea. As Dior Beauty Korea’s ambassador, Cha’s campaigns focus on his personal beauty philosophy – staying classy, minimal, and natural.

Hari Nef, L’Oreal Brand Ambassador

L’Oreal was the talk of the town when their new brand ambassador, Hari Nef, a 22-year-old transgender model and actress appeared in the ad campaign of ‘Your Skin Your Story’ which debuted at the Golden Globe Awards, promoting 33 shades of their True Match foundation. The Philadelphia-born model’s runway debut was at New York Fashion Week and was featured in the campaign alongside women and men of different sizes and ethnicities.

James Charles, CoverGirl Brand Ambassador

James Charles Dickinson, 17 years old at the time, was an American beauty YouTuber and makeup artist. He became the first male brand ambassador for American cosmetics brand CoverGirl after a tweet featuring his makeup went viral online. Currently, Charles counts over 22,000,000 followers on his Instagram account and over 23,000,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel.

Gong Yoo, Face of Tom Ford Beauty

The mega-hit movie, ‘Train to Busan’ actor, Gong Yoo is the latest to front a major brand like Tom Ford Beauty. Tom Ford Beauty is redefining modern luxury for the 21st century and has made mega-star Gong Yoo to be the new Asia-Pacific attaché. As brand attaché, Gong Yoo will partner with Tom Ford Beauty on upcoming campaigns spanning from fragrance to makeup.

Jin Xing, Dior Beauty Brand Ambassador

Dior, the largest luxury group in the world, has collaborated with China’s transgender celebrity, Jin Xing for a campaign centred on the brand’s J’adore fragrance. Jin Xing is a former male ballet dancer and army colonel and was the first person to go public about undergoing gender reassignment surgery in China. She has since become a prominent television presenter and has a significant following on social media.
