Professional Beauty India brought the esteemed salon chains of India on a panel discussion to discuss happenings in the salon industry amidst and post the lockdown. Payal Upase lists down the key takeaways and learnings from the panel discussion

On the 22nd of April, Professional Beauty India conducted a panel discussion in the #PBQuaranLive series. The focus of the panel discussion was ‘How salon chains are coping up with the pandemic and what’s plan B?’

The panelists of this discussion were Istayak Ansari, Truefitt and Hill; Samir Srivastava, Jean-Claude Biguine Salons; Spoorthy Shetty, BBlunt; Vikram Bhatt, Enrich and Vikram Mohan, Spalon India Pvt Ltd. The panel discussion was moderated by Vikas Vij, Managing Director, IDEX India. The hour-long session was an educational discussion on how salon chain owners across the country will deal with the repercussions of the pandemic.

  • There’s a lot of unpredictability in the situation. It is going to be difficult to regain client’s and employee’s trust pertaining to the safety spectrum.
  • Consumer’s behaviour will be driven by real-time situations.

  • Time to look at the larger picture than the short term plans.
  • With budget cuts at hand, revisiting your compensation plan would be highly recommended.
  • Rationalizing your product shelves can be a good option.

‘We’ than ‘I’

  • Being a business owner, one needs to balance all the sides. Along with business sustainability, one needs to look at team management as well.
  • Focus on must-have initiatives. Than the Should, Could and Wish to have initiatives.
  • Having honest conversations with your teammates is quite essential.
  • Team training is the need of the hour.

Key strategies

  • Differentiate between the outlets which are up and running and shut those which aren’t receiving more footfalls at least for some time.
  • More than acquiring new clients the goal is to retain the old clients. Looking at your financial plan is quite crucial.
  • It’s best to not hire new staff for the next 6 to 8 months.
  • To manage the footfalls post-lockdown, one can increase the working hours and can work in shifts.
  • Products companies are going to play a huge role as they have a wider reach. But it is going to be difficult to welcome new products in the salon.
  • Salons should start providing basic services at first.
