Celebrate your womanhood

by Arun Shirishkar

March 8 is International Women’s Day and is a testimony to every struggle, every victory, and every woman who fought for her right to equality in all forms. Professional Beauty & Hairdressers Journal (PBHJ) shares some stories behind this day and suggests some indulgent ways to celebrate.

The history of International Women’s Day goes back more than a century. Of the many stories associated with the origin of International Women’s Day from countries such as Denmark, Russia and US, there are few that catch the eye:

A woman called Clara Zetkin suggested the idea to make a day for women, international, in 1910 at an International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen – at the conference, 100 women from 17 countries unanimously agreed. Chronologically this was followed by another story connected with March 8, which says that it was not until a wartime strike in 1917 when Russian women demanded “Bread and Peace” and four days into the women’s strike, the Tsar was forced to abdicate, and the provisional government granted women the right to vote – declaring the day as Women’s Day. And lastly, according to National Public Radio it was on March 8, 1946, that feminist in Italy chose the mimosa flower as a symbol of strength, sensibility, and sensitivity for Women’s Day. There are more stories, both international and personal that represent the declaration of International Women’s Day. Today, this day is a celebration of women’s success on all fronts – economic, social, political and cultural.

The beauty industry is predominantly dominated by women, and it is great to see the zeal with which women have been defining success within this industry.

Be it you or your clients, we all deserve to celebrate us. Here’s an indulgent list of ways in which women can celebrate this day, rather the week, and perhaps the month:

  • Spend a day pampering yourself at a spa
  • Sign up at a hair salon for a spruce
  • Have a calming facial
  • Go crazy with your nails
  • Indulge in a makeup session and then hit the town with your girl friends
  • Order in from your favourite restaurant and binge watch whatever takes your fancy
  • Plan a holiday for once travel restrictions are lifted
  • Stay in, curl up in bed, and read your favorite book

You have earned your rights to do nothing and do everything… So, seize the day. Happy International Women’s Day from team PBHJ!
