by Arun Shirishkar

We often give into viral skin hacks that are supposed to transform our skin and make it soft and smooth. More often than not, these ingredients tend to damage our skin. Payal Upase lists out a few ingredients that you need to steer clear from

Whipping up a quick DIY face mask using common kitchen ingredients seems like a fun idea. However, using the wrong ingredient can do us more harm than good. Here are a few ingredients you need to stop using in your masks STAT.

Coconut Oil
The holy grail of every Indian kitchen and every dadima ka nuska. While coconut oil may do wonders for your hair, it doesn’t belong on your face. Coconut oil is highly comedogenic, that means that it will clog your pores and make you break out.

Lemon Juice
Even though lemons contain vitamin C which is a powerful antioxidant, they’re also extremely acidic. Using pure lemon juice directly on your skin will damage the skin and cause irritation. It will also make your skin more photosensitive (sensitive to sunlight). Using a serum with the goodness of vitamin C will be much more beneficial to your skin instead.

Baking Soda
Baking soda is extremely alkaline and it can mess with the pH level of your skin. Constant use of baking soda can prevent your skin from regulating its natural oil production. This may lead to irritated, dry and damaged skin.

Toothpaste
Most toothpastes have irritating ingredients like peppermint extracts, alcohol etc. That’s why it can highly irritate your skin and possibly give you a chemical burn. So stick to spot treatments recommended by your dermatologist.

While DIY skincare is fun try to steer clear of these ingredients and prevent your skin from any unnecessary damage.
