The virtual session on hair and hair care was led by Dyson Engineer, Veronica Alanis who shared information about Dyson’s expertise in understanding hair, heat damage, and its prevention, and Dermatologist Dr Geetika Mittal who offered insight into factors that damage hair and how to best to prevent and treat hair.
Types of hair damage
Dr Mittal, skin and hair expert, explained various types of hair damage and their causes, in Indian women. The list is extensive and includes – split ends; damage from styling tools, iron presses, blow dryers, rollers, brushes, and heat damage which can lead to boils on the scalp, ‘fried’ hair, cuticle damage; hair straightening that leads to oxidized hair that changes colour; chemical related colour damage; mechanical damage from when you pull back hair to make tight ponytails; Keratin treatments that break bonds to make hair longer or straighter; environmental pollution; boils or dirt on the scalp; urban lifestyles; and, chlorine from swimming.
She explained that heat damages different hair differently – if hair is thin and brittle then it sustains more damage much sooner. However, if you have healthy moisturized hair then it’s less obvious and takes several heat treatments to show dehydration, breakage, acne on the forehead, irritation etc. She warned us to be weary of heat and chemical products.
A few tips she shared for healthy hair include: Restoring natural protein with masks, orally taking protein and omega 3 fatty acid supplements; being weary of using styling tools; using more moisturizers, avocado rich products; using the right hair products – shampoo is for on the scalp not for the tips; in case of dandruff use scalp exfoliators; conditions are a must to lock in moisture; use a nice cotton towel to dry; avoid direct heat damage; use a heat protection spray/ Scalp sprays /Scarf or hat for in the sun.
Dyson – Extreme heat damage
After a careful study of the issues faced by Indian women in relation to hair care, Dyson research discovered that hair damage, dull hair, and dandruff were among the most common challenges. Further, they were able to identify that damage due to exposure to the sun and air-pollution had some of the biggest negative impacts towards the condition of hair. However, the main damage one can inflict to hair is that by exposure to extreme heat during styling.
There is a clear correlation between healthy and shiny hair. To keep hair looking healthy, the cuticle and cortex structure needs to be preserved. One of the best ways to do this is to protect it against excessive temperatures. Consisting of dead cells, the visible part of our hair is unable to repair itself – once the hair is damaged by heat, it is irreversible and will remain damaged until it is grown out from the root. Traditional perming and styling tools are mostly “dry to dry” products, which rely on extreme temperatures and cause irreversible heat damage to the hair. Therefore, frequent styling could gradually exhaust the healthy energy of the hair. The question of how to balance hair styling and hair health issues has become more prominent than ever.
Hair is categorised by three factors: types which ranges from poker straight to tight coils; the diameter of hair which varies from very fine to coarse; and density which is the combination of hair thickness and number of hair strands on your head.
