With more than 1,000 entries from 68 countries, Seema V Jerajani, Founder & Educator, SVJ Academy of Hair and Makeup, has won the first position under Fantasy Hairstyle category in the International Online Championship by Georgiy Kot. What makes this even more special is that this is the first time that the International Online Championship of hairstyling has been bagged by an Indian. PBxHJ team reached out to Jerajani for her reaction to this victory. Excerpts:
Importance of International Championships: As an educator, it is so important to inspire the professionals as well as aspirants that there is so much they can do and so much more that they can achieve as part of this industry and profession. However, this can happen by setting an example in front of them. It is the first time that the work of an Indian hairdresser has reached the top position, and that is certainly a big achievement for us.
It has been 36 years in the industry and continuous education, focus, practice, patience and perseverance is the success mantra. Also, I believe that sharing all the knowledge makes you grow. Currently, World championships are online in our industry and it is a good opportunity for all to participate in national or international championships as it does not involve travelling, which makes it easier to enroll and also saves participation cost.
The winning look: My aim was to showcase a hairstyle look that was Indian to the core. I presented my Fantasy hairstyle representing the Goddess Laxmi, the goddess of wealth, fortune, love, beauty, joy and prosperity, both material and spiritual. Maintaining the holiness of the divine look yet creating the fantasy hairstyle. Lastly, I would like to say, “Yaa Devii Sarva Bhooteshu Lakshmi Roopena Samsthita | Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namaha.” (Meaning: I bow again and again to the Goddess, who dwells in all creatures in the prosperous form.).
From enrollment to the final result: Depending on the category, one needs to plan the look. Where required, create a mood board and then plan the design. This should be followed by creating the basic structure and the detailing, and next work on the finishing. In this process, it may involve doing the competition hairstyle a few times before the result is presentable. There may be an option to create on a mannequin head or to do on a live model. Important is then to photograph it using good lighting either on a phone or by a professional photographer. The entries are either emailed or tagged on media such as Instagram depending on the requirement of the championship.
Message to aspirants or participants to International Online Championship: Competitions show you where you stand in your field. It is not about winning or losing that cannot be the focus. There can be only one on the top but before you reach that, it is competing with yourself. Every championship helps you assess your own skills, and how you can better yourself. It is not only your skills, it is your ability to sustain the physical, emotional and mental pressure. Coping with limitations, circumstances and whatever that comes your way, to rise above and go on. To focus. It develops inner strength, patience, perseverance. Yes, there are disappointments, but don’t let that get you down. The journey is beautiful and there is a lot of learning.
We at Professional Beauty & Hairdressers Journal India, would once again like to covey our hearty congratulations to Seema V Jerajani on her success and making India proud.
