It’s time to ace your salon management skills

by admin

Perhaps one of the biggest responsibilities of managing a salon business depends on a competent salon manager. It is crucial as the individual has to deal with a variety of matters such as keeping the internal staff motivated, funding, logistics, delivery, building relationships with clients, ensuring exceptional customer service, and driving results to grow the business. So, pursuing a course in Salon Management becomes mandatory for successful salon managers.

The basic ground
Salon management is critical because the salon has many facets. According to popular stylist, Asha Hariharan – Founder & Director, Beyond The Fringe Salons and Asha Hariharan Academy (AHA). “The fundamental thing to remember about the salon is you can either work in the business or you can work on the business. When you are working in the business, you are actually handling clients and you are doing services, but to have that go smoothly, you have to have someone working on the business, which is ensuring that you support everybody who is working in the business. There are products, which require profiling, costing, etc. We often have foreign companies coming to us with beautiful products, but I feel our economy is not conducive for them to sustain themselves because then, the product cost of service goes reasonably high. You need to keep that healthy as well.”

“In this business, it is extremely important to keep in mind a few other management issues like sustainability, recycling, upcycling, etc,” says Asha. “Salon management covers everything, right from consultation, products, bookings, handling the technical staff, clients, product exclusivity, etc. I know people – who have perfected the system of bookings; they don’t lose out on the clients. This requires a business manager to take the lead and understand the process. So, what you have to remember is the place doesn’t work only on its potential, but it works on the decoding of these business systems and human evaluations,” she adds.

Elaborating on the cutting-edge training modules that AHA offers, Asha says, “We have a 5-day programme, which covers a broad spectrum of salon management aspects. The program is exclusively constructed by my husband and management guru, Samir Hariharan to help students prepare for a career in salon management, where he takes one batch a month for new and existing salon owners. There are no separate eligibility parameters to pursue this course.”

Many people can transition to salon management positions. Others may open or operate their own business using the information provided in this program.
