A tête-à-tête with Pooja Desai, Kromakay’s Education Head and Creative Hair and Makeup Artist.
Kromakay Academy’s philosophy is to push boundaries in the hairdressing and makeup industry by nurturing new talent and mentoring passionate artists. In an exclusive conversation, Pooja Desai, Kromakay’s Education Head and Creative Hair and Makeup Artist elaborates on the courses offered by the academy, training module and contribution to the Indian beauty industry.
What are the courses offered by Kromakay Academy?
Our beginner’s course focuses on building a strong foundation. It comprises a basic comprehensive theory module and technical knowledge, followed by hands-on practical work sessions and detailed tutorials. The course intends to give students the confidence to take the leap in the creative field of hairdressing and make-up.
For salon professionals, we offer customised guided work sessions. The detailed technical demonstrations that Kromakay Academy offers for intermediate and advanced levels allows one to fully explore the commercial opportunities that the medium of colour brings in to your everyday salon business.
This year, we are adding a whole new set of two to five day workshops and weekend programmes focusing on tailor-made modules for specific trends and styles. We also have advanced trainings in short haircuts, long haircuts and barbering, along with fashion styling courses. As far as colour techniques are concerned, we cover everything – from basics to advanced, specialised Balayage technique and colour correction.
The latest highlight of our programmes at Kromakay Academy will be the Masterclass format, wherein reputed industry trendsetters will provide exciting new looks and techniques in cutting, colouring, styling, and makeup; all while offering an insight into the newest seasonal trends in an inspiring and creative environment.
How does Kromakay Academy help students with placements?
We try and absorb as many students as we can from our academy – provided they show the dedication and passion. Our professional programmes include internships that give students the opportunity to work on the floor with their trainers. What’s more, we also use their work experience programmes as an extended interview process.
What is the academy’s contribution to the cause of education in the Indian beauty industry?
Kromakay Academy was established over a decade ago and has mentored over 100 students, who have been a part of over 36 hairdressing and make-up programmes. Our journey includes many success stories including providing personalised hair and make-up training for Mr and Miss India delegates for the past four years.
Apart from bringing creativity, talent and expertise in their work, our graduates exude love, passion, and dedication and nurture their creative status with pride.
Please tell us about the academy’s training module and fee structure?
Kromakay Academy modules are created with a passion for learning. They comprise a comprehensive theory module along with applied and technical knowledge, that is followed by hands-on practical work sessions and detailed tutorials.
Our professional programmes include an intensive internship programme. We start with the basics and move to advance techniques, followed by systematic testing and conclude with a professional portfolio shoot to showcase the best work of the artists. The fee structure includes take-home professional kits for the students.
What do you have to say on the Indian education in the salon and hair industry?
With the growing demand for makeup artists and hair stylists, there has been a huge surge in talent. Thanks to globalisation, we have access to the international trends. What’s more, we’ve also stepped out of the conventional sphere, thus pushing the envelope in education, while upping the game with the international standards.
