‘There are challenges in every new business, so don’t give up!’ says Ritu Deswal of Style ‘N’ Scissors


Ritu Deswal, Founder of Style ‘N’ Scissors, a luxury salon chain in Jaipur, shares her story with Kanishka Ramchandani about her journey that started with five people and is now a strong team of 200 experts across 10 outlets, a skin clinic called Skiniti and a training institute.

What inspired you to become a beauty professional?
I aspired to become an entrepreneur, so I started Style N Scissors after working in the administration sector for nine years. I wanted to operate my salon in a very professional manner and wanted to handle all the major services like hair, beauty and make-up by myself. So, this inspired me to become a hairdresser and a make-up artist.

What was the aim behind establishing Style ‘N’ Scissors?
My aim behind establishing Style ‘N’ Scissors was to open a unisex salon (which was a new concept in Jaipur back then) with highly trained professionals that have the ability to deliver world class services in Jaipur. I introduced international brands in Jaipur such as Dermalogica, Wella Professional, Schwarzkopf Professionals and a few others.

What is the USP of your salons and who are your TG?
Our USP is that we are a unisex salon with international brands and a team that is qualified and trained internationally. The salons TG is for people who want to look their best all the time using best quality products.

What is your opinion of the beauty market in Delhi and Jaipur?
Beauty markets in both the cities are growing very fast. In Jaipur, destination wedding is very popular and as of now we are getting lots of international clients. Jaipur is also a favourite place for celebrities and for people who want to have a destination weddings, pre-wedding shoots and promotional events.

Tell us more about SKINITI
SKINITI is our skin clinic, where we offer the latest and innovative non-surgical treatments for the face and body to treat both men and women. We have a team of cosmetic doctors, advanced aesthetic medical practitioners and medical aestheticians who also provide suitable treatments to brides as they want to look flawless on their special day.

What are the challenges of running a chain of salons?
The competition is tough, and to run chain of salon one needs to understand the balance between the services you offer and the prices you set for them. We face a lot of challenges amongst which pricing strategies on online portals when compared to salon becomes crucial.

How do you manage your staff and deal with attrition?
For our staff, we provide them with a family-like atmosphere in which they can be the best of themselves and bring quality work. They take decisions independently and we provide them with international training, good incentives and salaries.

What is your plan going forward?
Going forward, we are planning to expand our chain of salon in 2020. We look forward to achieving more goals and accomplish newer heights.

On a personal level, what do you want to achieve?
I want to see Style N Scissors as the best luxury salon chain in India in the coming years.

What advice would you like to give to budding salon owners in India?My advice for the new salons is to work with honesty and respect your team and clients. Be daring and creative. Owning a salon is no doubt challenging but also rewarding and fun if you love it. Come up with strong strategies to ensure a successful business. Keep in mind that there are challenges in every new business, so don’t give up!’
