Why banana powder is a makeup gamechanger for Indian skin tones

by Arun Shirishkar

We’ve all taken a picture on a night out, only to see white patches where your concealer or contour was supposed to be. It could be due to your foundation, which could contain mineral sunscreen, or your powder, which comes with silica—the pore-blurring, light-reflecting particles that help to soak up oil. However, these can appear too white on the skin when exposed to intense camera flash. You don’t have to keep blending till it’s all a mess—just use a banana powder instead of your regular setting powder, especially if you have golden, yellow or olive undertones.

What is banana powder?
Like many other beauty trends (think baking, strobing and contouring), banana powder became popular because Kim Kardashian West began using it in her makeup routine back in 2016. When Kardashian West’s makeup artist couldn’t find the right setting powder shade to set her concealer, he reached for the now-cult favourite Ben Nye Luxury Banana Powder.

Translucent powder works well for those with light skin tones, as it appears white in colour and is undetectable on the skin. However, on darker skin, it can show up as camera flashback—leaving you look ghostly in photos. Since makeup for the ’gram is just as important, blending in a banana powder is the ideal way to promise a high definition makeup look that isn’t patchy or overdone. If you’re prone to redness, the yellow-toned banana powder can also colour correct your skin, so some makeup artist also suggest using it as a primer even before makeup application.

Here’s how you can apply banana powder
You can spackle the banana powder on with a brush, sponge on powder puff. Where you apply it depends on what you want from it—it can act like a highlighter if you apply it to the cheekbones, and a mattifier if you apply it over concealer under the eyes, on the T-zone and on the chin.

Editorial makeup artist Arshis Javeri, who is used to working with camera flashes on all-day shoots, decodes an easy way to use banana powder. “Dust it generously over your face after you’re done with your foundation, making sure to cover your T-zone thoroughly,” he says. “Do not be fooled by its similarity to your compact or tinted pressed powder. These usually tend to create streaks over your foundation or remove any pre-applied base product. Banana powder does away with this as you simply blot or dab on the powder over foundation,” he adds. After your foundation, add a layer of creamy concealer to any area of the face you’d like to brighten, like the under-eye area, or to cover any blemishes. Then, using a makeup sponge, apply the banana powder over all of the areas you’ve just concealed and leave it to marinate while you work on the rest of the face. “During this time, the heat created by this layer of powder will set your concealer, while the powder itself will soak up any excess oils on your skin. Then, dust off the powder with a fan brush,” concludes Javeri.
