Every summer has its own story with a few beach trips, hill station visits and road trips lined up in the holiday calendar. So, make sure, you leave some space for a sunscreen tube in your travel bag. And, if you’re wondering which one to pick, here’s an expert guide on how to choose the right sunscreen by Dr Rubina Shaikh, Aesthetic physician, M.B.B.S., A.F.I.H, Kaya Skin Clinics.

It is true that when it comes to skincare during harsh summers, applying sunscreen becomes a top priority for most of us. However, the right thing to do is to build a habit of wearing it all year round.

According to the Centre for Disease Control, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the USA. Sun exposure also causes visible signs of ageing, like wrinkles and hyperpigmentation

Now, on the basis of different skin types, how to choose the right sunscreen?

The selection of the right sunscreen becomes a hard task for the consumer, where there are so many products available in the market, from mineral sunscreens, and chemical sunscreens to ultra sheer sprays, sticks, and tinted ones.

So, while purchasing sunscreens, just follow these important tips :

  • Check for Broad Spectrum Protection: It indicates protection from UVA which causes ageing effects like wrinkles and age spots and UVB which can cause sunburn. UVA and UVB, both can lead to Skin Cancer.
  • Look for Sun Protection Factor [SPF]: The SPF should be at least 30 or higher. Higher SPF means better protection against UVB rays.
  • Substantivity: Sweat-resistant products protect up to 30 mins of heavy perspiration, water-resistant ones protect up to 40 mins of continuous water exposure and waterproof gives up to 80 mins of continuous protection.
  • Types of skin: If you have dry skin, look out for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. Those with normal skin can pick up any sunscreen. Whereas, those who have oily or combination skin should look out for oil-free or non-comedogenic labels. Those with sensitive skin should look out for physical sunscreens which have mineral blockers like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. Make sure that it is free of fragrances and other additives.

As mentioned earlier, sunscreens are available in various forms, like sprays, lotions, sticks or tinted ones.

  • Sprays are easy to use but some spots may get missed out. They are good for body applications and reapplying.
  • Lotions have ease of greater coverage but are a little difficult to use.
  • Sticks are more portable and good for reapplications though they carry the risk of dirt or germ accumulation.
  • Tinted or invisible sunscreens can reduce a white cast.

After you have picked up the right sunscreen of your choice, make sure you apply it at least 15-20 minutes before you step outdoors. Reapply every 2 hours for maximum protection. The Sun’s UV rays can penetrate through the glass windows and reach indoors. Hence, it is recommended to use sunscreen when one is sitting indoors. If one is swimming regularly or sweating a lot then reapply after wiping off. As for covering up, try using garments which can cover up entire arms and legs. In addition, wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses are recommended for UV protection.

Happy Summers to you !!!
