Holi may be a festival of colour and joy, but for skin, hair, and nails, it often means dehydration, irritation, pigmentation, and fatigue. To save you from all the trouble, Vidhi Arya brings some expert advice on how pre-holi rituals to protect and pamper yourself.
This year, luxury beauty is shifting from damage control to strategic prevention. Dermatologists and wellness experts agree: the secret to celebrating without compromise lies in preparing the skin and body in advance with treatments that strengthen, hydrate, and protect.
FACE & SKIN: Strengthen the Barrier Before the Colours Hit
Dr. Prachi B. Bodkhe, Dermatologist at Envi Aesthetics, stresses that Holi skincare should go beyond basic clean-ups.
“The secret to celebrating Holi without damage lies in planning ahead with treatments and rituals that strengthen, hydrate and protect your skin and hair.
For the face, think beyond basic clean ups. Medical-grade facials like HydraFacial-based therapies or RF facials boost circulation and collagen while reinforcing the skin barrier. For instance, the Elixir Radiance Facial Envi Aesthetics is an instant red carpet treatment designed to deeply hydrate, refine pores and enhance your natural glow.”
For longer-lasting resilience and glow, injectable skin boosters are becoming a popular pre-Holi ritual.
“If you want long-lasting glow and bounce, opt for HA-based or PDRN-based skin boosters. These microinjections improve dermal hydration and repair, making skin less prone to post-Holi dullness and irritation. Plan these at least two weeks before Holi so any soreness settles and you feel comfortable during celebrations.”
Archana Mayekar, Founder of Archana Wellness Clinic, adds that preparation must work at a cellular level.
“A HydraFacial is the perfect starting point. It deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and infuses the skin with intense hydration, helping to strengthen your skin barrier. Well-hydrated skin is more resilient, making it less prone to dryness and irritation during celebrations. To elevate your prep further, Exosome therapy works at a cellular level, enhancing skin repair and improving overall skin function. By supporting better cell communication, it helps your skin respond more effectively to environmental stressors. For regenerative benefits, PDRN (Salmon DNA) therapy stimulates collagen production, supports tissue repair, and enhances elasticity and glow.”
For pigmentation and uneven tone, targeted lasers help refine the complexion in advance.
“If pigmentation or tanning is a concern, the Q-Switch Laser can brighten and refine the skin so it looks clear and luminous before Holi.”
Dr. Rohan Goyal, Founder and Regenerative Medicine Specialist at Nuvana, warns against aggressive treatments right before the festival.
“Chemical peels, microneedling, laser treatments and heavy retinol-based treatments must be avoided before Holi, especially for sensitive skin, as it reacts easily with irritants and stains faster. LED Light Therapy, however, strengthens healing and reduces inflammation, making it a safer pre-Holi ritual.”
HAIR & SCALP: Hydration Is Your Best Defence
Hair and scalp often suffer the most during Holi due to harsh colours and repeated washing.
Dr. Bodkhe explains:
“Dry scalp holds onto colour more stubbornly. A professional scalp hydration ritual helps maintain moisture balance and keeps dandruff under control. If there is active hair fall, a mesotherapy session can stabilise shedding and strengthen follicles. Healthy, hydrated hair is far easier to cleanse post Holi.”
Experts agree that oiling the hair before stepping out remains a non-negotiable step, even for those opting for luxury treatments.
BODY & LASER CARE: Timing Is Everything
For those undergoing laser hair removal or body treatments, timing plays a critical role.
“Schedule your laser hair removal at least 10 days before Holi. This allows post-laser shedding to complete and reduces sensitivity, while ensuring optimal hydration for smoother, more protected skin,” says Dr. Bodkhe.
Gentle exfoliation is also recommended — but well in advance.
“To help prevent colour particles from penetrating deeply, gentle exfoliation a week prior creates a smooth surface, allowing colours to wash off more easily while reducing post-Holi congestion.” adds Dr. Goyal.
NAILS: Build a Protective Shield Against Stains
Swati Gupta, Director and Head of Creative Development at Bodycraft Salon, says nails need just as much preparation as skin.
“For maximum protection, a dark gel polish is one of the most reliable choices. Its cured finish creates a strong protective seal, reducing colour absorption and minimising water damage. If gel isn’t an option, choose a durable, long-wear top coat with high gloss and chip resistance. The aim is to create a proper barrier, not just add shine.”
Colour choice and layering are key.
“Colour choice plays an important role. Darker shades such as deep reds, berries, browns, or even black are far more forgiving during Holi. They help camouflage potential stains while adding an additional layer between harsh colours and the natural nail.” She adds, “Layering is key to creating an effective “nail shield.” Start with a strengthening base coat, apply two coats of your chosen polish, and finish with a reliable top coat. Avoid leaving nails bare — uncoated nails are more porous and tend to absorb colour more easily.”
Cuticle protection and aftercare matter just as much.
“Before stepping out, massage cuticle oil, coconut oil or petroleum jelly around the nail beds and under the free edge. After Holi, avoid aggressive scrubbing. Apply a thick layer of petroleum jelly at night, wear cotton gloves and leave it on overnight to restore moisture and strengthen the nail barrier.”
THE FINAL RULE: LUXURY + BASIC PROTECTION
Across all experts, one message remains consistent: advanced treatments must be paired with simple protective habits.
Oiling the hair, applying a thick moisturiser or sunscreen, and avoiding bare nails are essential steps before stepping out to play Holi.
True luxury this festive season is not about one-day radiance. It is about investing in rituals that strengthen the skin barrier, hydrate from within, and protect hair and nails — so you can celebrate fearlessly, beautifully, and without compromise.
