The leading consumer goods companies collaborate to tackle greenhouse gas emissions and fight against climate change.

Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Reckitt, and BASF are joining forces in a groundbreaking collaboration to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative, named Flue2Chem, will convert industrial waste gases in the UK into more sustainable chemicals. For consumer goods with the aim of reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

With funding from Innovate UK, 15 organizations were able to secure USD 3.24 million for the two-year project. This will help cut 15 to 20 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually in the UK. Additionally, this investment will support the development of methods to transform carbon from waste streams of other industries. And transform them into affordable raw materials for consumer goods.

“The new business model will aim to reduce the need for imported fossil fuel material,” said David Bott, SCI’s Head of Innovation. “Instead, the consortium will build a new, more sustainable supply chain whilst also mitigating waste emissions. The group will develop methods for using carbon captured from waste streams of other industries and transform them into affordable raw materials for consumer products.”

Therefore, this cross-sector collaboration marks a significant step towards mitigating waste emissions. And reducing the need for imported fossil fuels. This will help to create a more sustainable future for the industry and the planet. Project lead Ian Howell, Unilever’s Home Care Science & Technology R&D Director and Chair of SCI’s SMCP Group also added, “This is a game-changing opportunity to accelerate action and rewire the chemical value chain to be less reliant on fossil fuels.”

Howell continued, “It’s a bold ambition and one that, at Unilever, we have been publicly calling for action over the last two years. No single company can do this alone and so to have the power of 15 manufacturers and academics marks a significant step forward not only for the UK, but globally too.” This is a major step towards achieving the UK’s goals of becoming more environmentally sustainable and reducing its carbon footprint.

Hence, the effort will lead to a more sustainable supply chain in the chemicals industry by lowering waste emissions. And reducing the requirement for imported fossil fuels and additionally have a positive effect on the economy. In a nutshell, this initiative is a major step forward for the industry. And for the fight against climate change. By bringing together a group of leading companies and organisations, it has the potential to set a new standard for sustainability. And to inspire others to take action.
