Over the years, social media has brought us a whirlwind of trends. While some have mesmerised us with their creative flair and beauty, others have left us scratching our heads. Today, we stitch together the elements of one such trend that falls into the latter category: the yarn makeup trend!
These days, our social media feeds are flooded with people gluing yarn to their faces and using makeup to beautify it! The trend has certainly piqued the curiosity of makeup enthusiasts for both its bizarre nature and unexpected creativity. Vidhi Arya from Professional Beauty India explores the fad, and here’s what you need to know.
When it comes to makeup, it’s surely more than applying a few products on your face as per a set of rules. It is surely art! And sometimes this art requires more than your vanity. Things lying around your house? Sure! Yarn? Move over crochet, and try it for your makeup if you really want to follow this trend.

The yarn makeup trend includes gluing woollen yarn to the face and then using makeup on top of it. While some people are using circular motions to cover the face, others are using coils. People usually start at their nose and go in round motions to cover the face. The trickiest part is covering the areas around the eyes and mouth.

While some are keeping the makeup fairly simple, some looks are bold and dramatic. There are many variations that can be seen around. You’d be able to spot recreation of movie characters, whimsical looks, and some scary ones, too.

How to create the look?
- Gather your supplies – a face-safe glue stick, yarn, and your usual makeup.
- Start with a clean base and apply Vaseline to protect your skin from the risks of using glue and yarn.
- Apply the glue and start wrapping the yarn around your face, starting from the nose. Go in a circular motion to cover the whole face.
- Once the yarn is in place, apply makeup as you’d usually do. Or, go out being all dramatic and experiment to your heart’s content.
Here’s a word of caution
We do not recommend you to do this trend without thorough consideration of safety. The trend comes with its own share of risks. The process is long, tedious, and tiresome. Additionally, removing glue and yarn from the face can leave the skin irritated and damaged. While you can soak your face to let the glue melt, this trend is not a gentle one and surely not for ones with sensitive skin.
