We’ve all heard time and again: sunscreen is a must. But, are you sure you understand what it really protects you from, how it helps your skin, and what’s the best variant for you? Here’s an SPF cheat sheet for all your sunscreen questions!

What is SPF?

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, measures how effectively a sunscreen protects your skin from UVB rays from the sun.

  • SPF 15 filters about 93% of UVB rays
  • SPF 30 blocks about 97%
  • SPF 50 blocks about 98%

As of now, no sunscreen offers 100% protection. That is why reapplying every two hours or after swimming and sweating is a must.

You must note that SPF only measures UVB protection. It does not consider UVA or other types of light. That’s where broad-spectrum formulas come in.

What are the different types of light we need protection from?

UVB Rays

  1. Causes visible sunburn
  2. The main contributor to skin cancer
  3. Affects the outermost layers of skin

UVA Rays

  1. Penetrate deeper into the skin
  2. Causes premature ageing, pigmentation, and wrinkles
  3. Play a role in skin cancers, too
  4. Can pass through windows and clouds

Blue Light

  1. Emitted by screens (phones, laptops, LEDs) and the sun
  2. Contributes to hyperpigmentation and skin ageing
  3. Affects all skin tones, especially medium to dark complexions, prone to dark spots

What are the different types of sunscreens

Chemical Sunscreens

  1. Absorb UV rays and convert them to heat
  2. Lightweight, often transparent
  3. Key ingredients: avobenzone, oxybenzone, octinoxate
  4. Great for daily wear and sports activities
  5. May cause irritation on sensitive skin

Mineral (Physical) Sunscreens

  1. Sit on top of the skin and physically block UV rays
  2. Key ingredients: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide
  3. Best for sensitive, acne-prone, or children’s skin
  4. Often thicker and may leave a white cast

Broad-Spectrum Sunscreens

  1. Protect against both UVA and UVB rays
  2. Non-negotiable in any effective sunscreen

Tinted Sunscreens

  1. Often contain iron oxides to block blue light
  2. Double as light coverage makeup
  3. Great for those with melasma or hyperpigmentation

How to choose the right sunscreen for your skin and activity

  • Oily/acne-prone skin: Go for gel-based, oil-free, non-comedogenic formulas
  • Dry skin: Choose hydrating sunscreens with ceramides or hyaluronic acid
  • Sensitive skin: Opt for mineral sunscreens with minimal fragrance
  • Outdoor activities/water sports: Pick a water-resistant SPF 50+
  • Daily indoor use: A light SPF 30+ with blue light protection is ideal

Other than that:

  • Minimum SPF 30 is recommended for all skin tones.
  • Higher SPF (like SPF 50) is ideal for fair, sensitive, or acne-prone skin.

Pro tip: Reapply even when indoors if you’re near windows or under direct artificial light.
