Forest Essentials and Taj: a collaboration for plastic-free luxury

Forest Essentials and IHCL redefine sustainable luxury by replacing single-use plastics with refillable ceramic dispensers, introducing bespoke Ayurvedic blends, and empowering local communities.

Forest Essentials has partnered with Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL) for a sustainability initiative in the eco-conscious hospitality field. This industry-first collaboration eliminates single-use plastics across all Taj properties. The brands have introduced refillable, biodegradable ceramic dispensers and bulk liquid amenities.

Blends rooted in heritage

At the heart of this initiative is Forest Essentials’ signature Aloe Vera and Neem formulation, which holds soothing and purifying properties. Extending the experience further, five exclusive blends have been crafted for Taj’s historic Palaces. Each bespoke formulation is inspired by the unique heritage and character of its palace. They offer not just a product but an authentic connection to their surroundings.

Measurable environmental impact

By replacing plastic bottles with ceramic dispensers, the two have achieved a 61% reduction in plastic consumption. That prevents use of nearly 3,787 kilograms plastic each month. Additional efficiencies include a 13% reduction in water use, a 31% drop in electricity consumption, and significant cuts in packaging and label waste. The markers collectively showcase a lower carbon footprint of Taj properties.

Ethical sourcing and community empowerment

The beauty brand created all formulations with ethically sourced Ayurvedic ingredients, ensuring traceability and environmental responsibility. Staying true to its values, it continues to empower local communities by employing women in Uttarakhand to produce soaps, Ubtans, and oils.
