Gauging the hairstyling industry with Sylvia Chen

A distinguished professional, Sylvia Chen talks about the hairstyling industry and trends in a candid conversation.

Sylvia Chen received training at renowned institutions such as the Vidal Sassoon Academy and Toni & Guy Academy in London. She is a gifted artist and a well-known figure in the field of hair styling. She is also the owner of the much-reputed Butterfly Pond Salon. Vidhi Arya from Professional Beauty India had a candid conversation with Sylvia Chen, where Chen shared her insights on the current trends in the hairstyling industry. Let’s delve into the details.

You have been in the industry for almost one and a half decades. How have the beauty trends changed over the years?

Tremendously! Beauty trends have changed tremendously in the last 10 years. When I started my salon in 2005, we had limited brands. But today, in 2023, especially after COVID-19, a huge leap has taken place. We have some amazing brands coming in. Today, there are multiple good brands in the market. As a hairdresser, it’s all about exploration.

You should speak to multiple hairdressers and take opinions. You need to be open to trying new products. Don’t be stuck up. And, on that note, Godrej Professional is an Indian brand — 100% Indian. We have amazing colours with no ammonia and fantastic kera-smooth products too which are anti-frizz. So, be bold and try new products, is all I can say.

Which are the top trending looks of this season?

Dimenison-Ombreyage. It’s a collection we have carefully curated by considering every colour family that perfectly suits Indian skin tones. Our hashtag is #coloursareforall. However, consultation is the key. Clients need a proper consultation to decipher which colour collection will work best for them. A good consultation will help establish which colour family will suit your skin tone.

One evergreen look which you think never goes out of fashion?

So, I would say the looks carried by Dimple Kapadia in the eighties to Shilpa Shetty— classy flowy layers and butterfly haircuts. These are very classic looks. Most women love it — it’s safe and easy to try. The best thing about it is that you don’t need to blow dry your hair, it can be worn naturally.

One look you wish was gone?

No, I don’t want any look to be gone. I’m a hairdresser, and I love hair. Fashion is very cyclic. Nothing goes out of fashion, and everything eventually comes back. Whatever was relevant in the past will come back but with a modern touch, twist, and elegance.

With the monsoon around the corner, what hair care tips would you suggest?

Firstly, you need to switch your shampoo. It is because humidity increases during monsoons. So, the shampoo you used during winter may not work during monsoon. Go to your trusted hairdresser and consult them regarding suitable products.

One thing that keeps you motivated as an artist?

It is being on stage and interacting with hairdressers from across India. That is amazing. It makes me so glad I become a hairdresser. I am really glad!

A message to the aspirants of the industry?

You must love what you do. Because when you love what you do, there is passion. And when there’s passion, you will enjoy your work, even if you work 12 -15 hours a day. Just love what you do and go for it full throttle!

As Sylvia mentions, Godrej Professional recently launched the Dimension-Ombreyage Collection. The collection weaves beauty and the message of acceptance, inclusivity and self-expression through hair colour. This collection showcases four captivating hair colour looks — Sandstone Ombreyage, Auburn Ombreyage, Crimson Ombreyage, and Pearl Square. Each look encompasses varied tones and styles, offering a distinct appearance for every mood, style, and individual identity.
