The beauty giant, L’Oréal bought over Lactobio for an undisclosed sum to benefit from its microbiome knowledge and formulations. L’Oréal aims to combine its own scientific knowledge and technological base with Lactobio’s strong formulations that use living organisms as a component. This is with a view to creating coming-of-age skincare products.
Lactobio, based in Copenhagen, was founded in 2017 by Søren Kjærulff and Charlotte Vedel. The company formulates private-label skincare ingredients that are probiotic and postbiotic in nature. The company also operates Bak, its own probiotic skincare brand.
The founders of Lactobio developed a unique, proprietary microbiome discovery platform and screening method. It helped them find and work on the most effective and safe strains. Creating a large biobank of beneficial bacteria, the company develops several topical formulations with live bacteria that impart numerous benefits to skin and hair.
The Path Ahead as L’Oréal Acquires Lactobio
As L’Oréal acquires Lactobio, it aims to create new and safe cosmetic solutions with live bacteria as a constituent. It will make the best use of Lactobio’s expertise in microbiome and its significant IP portfolio. This acquisition will help L’Oréal build upon its 20 years of advanced research in the microbiome scientific territory. It will also help L’Oréal to deepen the knowledge it holds regarding the microorganisms that live on the skin.
