As winter approaches, only a well-crafted skincare routine can be your defence against the harsh effects of the season. Co-founder and Head Of Research at Aminu Skin Care, Prachi Bhandari shares winter skincare tips that will make the season much more pleasant for you and your skin.

Since winter can be a harsh season for your skin, it’s essential to adapt your skincare routine to combat lower temperature & reduced ambient humidity. Keeping the same in view, let’s debunk some common myths and explore some winter skincare tips that will help you keep your skin hydrated and radiant throughout the season.

Winter Skincare Tips You Should Follow:

  • Select a cleanser with a pH close to your skin’s natural level (4.5 to 5.5) to avoid damaging the skin’s protective barrier as that can increase dehydration and lead to sensitivity.
  • Use a mild exfoliator as exfoliation helps remove dead skin cells and promotes the absorption of products.
  • Moisturise and moisturise more. Hydration is key during the winter months. Start using a moisturiser before your skin starts to get dry or develops cracks.
  • Give extra care to your lips and eyes. Use hydrating creams in these areas as they lack oil glands and need special attention.
  • Even in winter, the sun’s rays can be harsh. Protect your skin from sun damage by using sunscreen.

How have winter skincare techniques evolved over the years?

There are a couple of factors that have played a big role in the evolution of winter skincare over the years. A better understanding of skin has played a pivotal role in the evolution of skincare. Further, what has helped is the wide dissemination of knowledge amongst skin care professionals and end users alike. This has been duly supported by advancements in ingredient knowledge and the discovery of more potent and safer ingredients that have helped create easy-to-use, potent, and safer products for winter care. For example, reduction in molecular size of molecules allows deeper penetration of ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.

Another change that I see is that earlier people had a more curative approach towards skincare. But, today with increased awareness there is a lot of focus on preventive care. Consumers are now taking a more proactive approach to skincare.

Myths about skin-care? And how do we bust them?

Younger skin is less susceptible to winters: While on the surface young skin makes it through the winter easily without much care it does take a toll on your skin health if not given enough care and love. In fact, not taking care of your skin during winter often leads to premature ageing, photodamage, and increased sensitivity. As they say, precaution is better than cure.

Secondly, the thicker the cream, the better it hydrates: A thicker cream might clog the skin cells and prevent the products from entering the pores. This is why instead of looking out for thick moisturisers, use moisturisers that attract moisture and lock in that moisture without clogging your pores and making your skin feel greasy. Not to forget, keep replenishing.

Follow these tips and product recommendations to keep your skin hydrated and vibrant. If your skin has unique needs, consult professionals for personalised advice. Embrace the season with confidence, knowing your skin is well-prepared to stay radiant.
