From classic refinement to modern edge, Jim Shaw, Multi Award Winning Men’s Hairdresser and Director at TONI&GUY Billericay, reveals his ultimate guide to mastering the ever-iconic, effortlessly cool quiff haircut.

When it comes to men’s hairstyles that have stood the test of time, few make a statement quite like the quiff. It’s bold, confident, and endlessly adaptable. It truly bridges classic sophistication with modern rebellion. Whether you’re drawn to a sleek, polished finish or prefer a textured, lived-in vibe, the secret to a great quiff lies in the right cut, precise technique, and perfectly chosen products. And who better to guide you through it than Jim Shaw, the Multi Award Winning Men’s Hairdresser and Director at TONI&GUY Billericay?

Here’s what he needs you to know before getting a quiff haircut:

Know what you want when consulting with your barber

“Before committing to a quiff, it’s essential to have a proper chat with your barber. The quiff is a complex style. It’s shape, height, and texture should be tailored to your face shape, hair type, and personal style. Factors including hair growth pattern, hair density and lifestyle should all be considered when choosing the right quiff. That quick consultation ensures your cut compliments your features and gives you a style that’s realistic to maintain day to day.”

Prepare the hair accordingly

“Getting your hair ready before styling a quiff is just as important as the cut itself. The quiff haircut relies on volume, shape, and control and that all starts with how you prep your hair. Clean, towel-dried hair is the ideal base, apply a lightweight pre-styling product like a volumising mousse or sea salt spray to add texture and hold, then use a blow dryer to lift the hair upwards and backwards with a vented brush. This creates the foundation and direction your quiff needs before you even touch your finishing product.”

Blowdry and shape

“Blow-drying is where your quiff really starts to take shape. The key is direction and technique. Start by blow-drying your hair from the roots, lifting it upward and backward using a round brush to build height. Focus on creating volume at the front, since that’s the statement area of the quiff, while keeping the sides smoother and more controlled for balance. Use a medium heat setting to avoid damage, then switch to a cooler setting to lock the shape in place.”

Apply product for hold and definition

“Once your quiff is shaped and dry, it’s time to lock it in with the right product. The goal here is to add hold, texture, and definition without weighing your hair down. Pomades are a great option for holding your hair in place, warm a small amount between your palms, then work it evenly through the hair, starting from the back and moving forward to avoid clumping at the front. Use your fingers or a comb to define the shape and height of your quiff, and finish with a spray hairspray if you need extra hold. With the right product and technique, your quiff will stay sharp, structured, and effortless.”
