How to Nail a Traditional Maharashtrian Look for Ganpati

The Ganpati festival is just a few days away. As we all gear up to decorate our homes and make fulfilling modaks, let’s also pull out everything needed for a traditional Maharashtrian look for Ganpati. In full festive spirit, Vidhi Arya from Professional Beauty India shares simple tips to ace the traditional Maharashtrian makeup and hair.

As Ganpati season approaches, many women look forward to embracing traditional Marathi styles, with the Navvari saree being a standout choice. But, it’s not just this gorgeous saree that makes the look complete, there’s a lot we can do with our hair and makeup, too. Here’s how to perfect the Maharashtrian look for Ganpati, from makeup to hair, ensuring you look stellar during the festivities.

Flawless Base with a Natural Glow

  • To ace the Maharashtrian look, begin with a well-moisturised face.
  • Use a primer to help your makeup last all day long.
  • For foundation, go for a lightweight, dewy formula as per your skin tone.
  • Conceal any imperfections.
  • Lastly, set the base with a translucent powder, focusing on the T-zone to control shine.

Defining the Eyes

The eyes are the focal point of a traditional Marathi look.

  • Apply a neutral eyeshadow as your base. Add depth with warm-toned browns or golds, blending them into the crease.
  • Line your eyes with a kajal or black eyeliner, and extend it slightly beyond the lash line for a winged effect.
  • For a more traditional touch, line the waterline with kajal as well.
  • Finish with a generous coat of mascara to make your eyes pop.
  • If you’re feeling adventurous, try a thin line of gold eyeliner above your black liner for an extra festive touch.

The Signature Bindi

A Marathi look is not complete without the traditional bindi, the crescent-shaped bindi in red or maroon. You can also choose a small round one in red or maroon.

Blushing Cheeks with a Hint of Highlight

  • Choose a light rose pink or peach shade that complements your skin tone.
  • Apply it to the apples of your cheeks and blend it upwards towards the temples.
  • To add a subtle radiance, apply a highlighter on the high points of your face—cheekbones, bridge of the nose, and the cupid’s bow.

Festive Lips

  • For the lips, a deep red or maroon lipstick is a classic choice.
  • A hint of gloss can be added for a plumping and festive effect, but keep it minimal to maintain the traditional vibe.

Traditional Marathi Hairdos

  • The traditional hairdo is a bun adorned with gajra (fresh jasmine flowers). Part your hair in the centre and pull it back into a low bun. Secure the bun with pins and wrap it with gajra.
  • If you prefer a more intricate look, try a braided bun by creating a simple braid first, then wrapping it into a bun before adding the gajra.
  • For those who like to leave their hair open, a half-up, half-down style works beautifully. Simply tease the hair at the crown, pin it back, and let the rest of the hair flow naturally.

Traditional Marathi Attire

Pulling off traditional Marathi outfits like the Navvari requires a lot of confidence and cultural appreciation. The Navvari is a nine-yard saree worn by the Maharashtrian ladies on special occasions. The key to carrying the Navvari lies in embracing its rich history and wearing it with confidence, allowing the outfit to reflect your traditional approach and your unique personal style.

Jewellery and Accessories

Complete your look with traditional Maharashtrian jewellery, like the nath (nose ring), thushi, tanmani, chandrahaar, and green glass bangles. These not only add to the elegance but also tie the whole ensemble together, making you Ganpati-ready.
