Here's your ultimate Holi haircare guide!

Holi is all about vibrant colours, laughter, and endless fun, but once the celebrations wind down, your hair often tells a different story—dry, tangled, and coated in stubborn colour. But, don’t fret, we’ve got you covered with this Holi haircare guide.

While the festival brings joy, the aftermath can leave your hair feeling dull and lifeless. But, with the right Holi haircare routine, you can restore your locks to their natural softness and shine.

Here are some simple Holi haircare tips by Audrey D’Souza, National Creative Director – Hair, Lakme Salon

Gentle Hair Wash

After celebrating Holi, your hair will likely be coated with vibrant colours and powders. The first step to getting your hair back to its natural state is to rinse it thoroughly with lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, as it can strip the scalp and hair of its natural oils, which are essential for keeping your hair healthy and nourished. Start by gently running water through your hair to loosen as much colour and powder as possible before moving on to shampooing.

Shampoo Carefully

Post-Holi, you may need to shampoo your hair a few times to fully remove the colours. Use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo, as this will cleanse your hair effectively without stripping away essential moisture. Sulfates can be harsh on the hair, causing dryness and potential damage. When shampooing, gently massage the scalp with your fingertips, and avoid vigorous scrubbing, which could cause tangling and breakage. Be patient and make sure the colour is thoroughly washed out, but be gentle to avoid damaging the strands.

Condition Your Hair

Once the colours are gone, it’s important to restore moisture to your hair. Apply a rich, nourishing conditioner or a deep conditioning hair mask. These products are designed to repair and replenish the moisture lost during the Holi festivities. Leave the conditioner on for 5-10 minutes to allow it to penetrate deeply into the hair fibres. When you rinse, use cool water as it helps to seal the hair cuticles, locking in moisture and keeping your hair shiny and smooth.

Serum or Leave-In Conditioner

To help your hair recover and regain its natural softness, apply a serum or a leave-in conditioner. These products will help detangle your hair, making it easier to manage and style. Additionally, they create a protective barrier on the hair, reducing frizz and enhancing shine. The serum or leave-in conditioner will also provide extra hydration, making your hair feel silky and soft. Apply it evenly through damp hair, focusing on the ends to prevent split ends and dry patches.

Trim Your Hair

After the intense exposure to colours and powders, your hair may feel drier than usual. If the ends appear damaged or brittle, it’s a good idea to get a trim. A trim helps to remove split ends, which are common after hair experiences stress or damage. Cutting off a small amount can actually promote healthy growth and give your hair a fresh, rejuvenated look. You’ll notice that trimming the ends can help restore bounce and vitality to your hair.

Extra Moisture

If your hair still feels dry or damaged after the initial care routine, consider indulging in a professional hair treatment, such as a Protein Rush Hair Spa or an Olaplex Hair Spa treatment at Lakmé Salon. These treatments are designed to deeply replenish moisture, restore strength to your hair, and repair any damage caused by the chemicals or the physical stress of Holi colors. A Protein Rush treatment helps to rebuild the protein structure in your hair, making it stronger and more resilient, while an Olaplex treatment works to repair broken bonds, restoring your hair to its healthiest state. These professional treatments are ideal for tackling more severe dryness or damage.

Holi haircare doesn’t have to be a daunting task. A little extra love and the right products can go a long way in bringing your hair back to life. So, enjoy the festival to the fullest, knowing that with this simple hair care routine, your tresses will stay happy, healthy, and Holi-ready for years to come!
