In a candid conversation with Priyanka Parshurami, Celebrity MUA, Shrruti Saraf shares how to balance protection, practicality and style for Holi Make-up in sun, colour and water.

Holi celebrations demand a practical beauty approach. Between sun exposure, water and vibrant pigments, makeup must prioritise skin protection without compromising appearance. According to celebrity makeup artist Shrruti Saraf, Holi Make-up should never mirror red-carpet glamour. It must be structured, functional and resilient.

The process begins days in advance. Deep hydration strengthens the skin barrier, making it less prone to pigment absorption. On the day of the celebration, moisturisation followed by sunscreen forms the protective base. A primer layered on top acts as an added shield against colour and environmental exposure.

Building a Practical Base

Saraf recommends two thin layers of matte foundation, allowing the first layer to set before applying the second. A matte finish ensures that Holi colours photograph well without clashing with excess glow. Light setting techniques enhance durability and mild water resistance.

Eye makeup should remain minimal. Heavy liners, dramatic detailing and false lashes often bleed or fade. Instead, subtle contouring and soft dimension on the eyelids create structure while keeping the look intact. The focal point can shift to a long-wear warm rose lip tone that remains visible amid bright festival colours.

Post-Holi Skin Recovery

Prevention extends to post-care. Strong activities such as exfoliating acids or retinoids should be paused a week prior to avoid sensitisation. After festivities, cleansing must be controlled rather than aggressive. Over-washing and scrubbing frequently cause more irritation than the pigment itself.

Hydration and barrier repair should guide to recovery. If irritation occurs, actives must remain paused to allow natural healing. Cooling and moisture-focused treatments help restore balance after sun and environmental exposure.

The Holi Beauty Mindset

Holi Make-up is ultimately about discipline and restraint. Protect the skin before stepping out, keep the look intentional yet practical, and allow the complexion to recover calmly afterwards. When preparation replaces panic, both skin health and style remain intact.
