Fine, brittle hair, a greasy scalp, and hair fall had left my hair looking flat, fragile, and difficult to manage. After a haircut and a little over a month of regularly using the Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate range, here’s what changed.
There was a point when my hair seemed to have a mind of its own. And not in a good way. My scalp would get greasy quickly, while my lengths felt fine, dry, and brittle. I was also dealing with hair fall associated with hypothyroidism, which made the overall condition of my hair even more frustrating.
My strands lacked strength; the ends looked worn. And anything too rich often left my fine hair looking flat and heavy. So, before starting the Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate, or Redken ABC range, I decided to give my hair a clean slate.
I got a haircut.
A Fresh Start for My Hair
This detail matters. I didn’t want to mistake cutting off old, damaged ends for the results of a haircare routine. The haircut removed the most compromised ends and gave me a healthier starting point. From there, I wanted to see whether I could maintain that condition and improve how my hair looked and felt.
I’ve now been using the range regularly for a little over a month. The change hasn’t been an overnight transformation, but I have noticed a gradual difference in the way my hair feels, looks, and behaves.
My Fine Hair Feels Stronger
The first thing I noticed was the feel of my hair: my strands felt smoother, my ends looked less rough, and my hair became easier to detangle and manage. Instead of feeling fragile and overly dry, my lengths felt softer and more conditioned, without that heavy, coated feeling I was trying to avoid.
That’s particularly important for me because I have fine hair. I wanted my hair to feel healthy without losing its natural movement and volume. And given that the ABC range is designed to strengthen damaged hair and reduce breakage, could I have asked for more from a repair-focused haircare range? It was doing what it was meant to.
Less Breakage, Less Visible Damage
My biggest concern wasn’t simply how my hair looked immediately after washing. I wanted to maintain the condition of my lengths while minimising the breakage and damage that tends to make fine hair look even thinner.
And this is where I’ve noticed a real difference. My hair started to feel less fragile, and the breakage and visible damage I was struggling with felt under control. My ends look healthier, too, particularly when compared with how they felt before I started this journey.
Hair Fall and Hair Breakage Are Different
One thing this experience has taught me is that hair fall and hair breakage aren’t the same thing. Because I was dealing with thyroid-related hair fall, I wasn’t expecting a bonding treatment to address the underlying cause. That’s not what the range is designed to do.
What I wanted was to improve the condition of the hair I already had. And after a regular routine, I’ve noticed that my hair fall has reduced (due to a healthy mix of supplements and scalp massages), while the texture and porosity of my hair have significantly improved. For me, that’s been an important part of the transformation.
Fine Hair Needs the Right Kind of Repair
I’ve also realised that caring for fine hair isn’t simply about using less product. It’s about using the right kind of care without weighing the hair down. That’s one reason I particularly liked incorporating the Redken ABC Lightweight Liquid Conditioner into my routine. It gave my lengths the conditioning they needed while helping me avoid that heavy feeling at the roots.
The result? Hair that feels cared for, without feeling coated.
So, What Does My Hair Look Like Now?
The transformation isn’t about suddenly having thick, perfect hair. It’s much more realistic than that. My hair feels smoother, stronger, and more manageable. My ends look healthier, my hair feels less fragile, and I have more confidence in how it looks every single day. And yes, I still wash my hair every day.
My scalp gets greasy, and daily washing is what works for me. I haven’t suddenly switched to washing my hair less often just because I’ve started using a bonding haircare range. But I have noticed that my hair can be washed daily without feeling like I’m constantly choosing between a clean scalp and healthy-looking lengths.
My Redken ABC Before-and-After
Looking back, the haircut was important because it gave me a fresh starting point. But maintaining that starting point has been about consistency. A little over a month into using Redken ABC, I’ve noticed less breakage and visible damage that previously bothered me, and I feel much more in control of my haircare routine.
My hair still has its challenges. It’s fine; my scalp still gets greasy, and I still have to deal with hair fall (though it’s far lesser now that I have the right products). But it feels healthier. And that’s what matters most.
The haircut gave me a fresh start. Redken ABC helped me maintain it. And for my fine, brittle hair, that has made a real difference.
My Weekly Routine
For my fine hair and greasy scalp, I’ve found that using every product every day can be too much. Instead, I rotate between clarifying, bond-repair and low-product days.
MONDAY + FRIDAY | RESET & CLARIFY
- Use a clarifying/scalp-purifying shampoo (not part of the range)
- Double-shampoo if roots are very oily
- Apply a lightweight conditioner from mid-lengths to ends
- Finish with a small amount of ABC Leave-In Cream on damp ends
TUESDAY + THURSDAY + SATURDAY | KEEP IT SIMPLE
- Skip washing if your scalp doesn’t feel greasy
- If needed, use a gentle, lightweight shampoo
- Condition only the mid-lengths and ends
- Air dry where possible
- Skip serum and balm unless your ends need them
WEDNESDAY + SUNDAY | BOND REPAIR
- Wash with ABC Shampoo
- Apply ABC Conditioner from mid-lengths to ends
- Follow with ABC Leave-In Cream
- If ends feel dry, use either:
- 1 drop of ABC Serum, or
- A tiny amount of ABC Hair Bandage Balm
- Keep both products away from the scalp
