Jake Unger suggests what to consider before cutting your client’s hair

Short hair continues to be a popular trend for AW24. Jake Unger from HOB Academy suggests three things that stylists should consider before taking the plunge and cutting the client’s hair.

HOB Academy head of education, Jake Unger, says there’s a shorter hairstyle to suit everyone. “You want your client’s new haircut to have the wow factor – the first wow factor is an involuntary reaction if something looks incredible. Then there are three key ingredients to achieve ‘wow’: suitability, execution and fashionable, each component just as important as each other to achieve the desired reaction.”

Suitability

The cut should be based on factors like face shape, body shape, as well as lifestyle. Be careful not to pigeonhole certain face shapes with particular haircuts. For instance, some people suggest that a bob doesn’t go well with a round face shape. However, this isn’t completely true. Ultimately, it depends on the length you choose and if you create volume or slim the shape. You must study the face shape and then add complement or hide certain features.

Execution

Once you find a haircut that suits all the above factors, the next important aspect is great execution. A haircut may theoretically suit a client but if it’s not well-executed, it won’t look good. You need to ensure that you continuously upskill through education and courses. The idea is that if you progress your fundamental techniques, you can mix and match to create new looks and trends.

Fashionable

If you want your haircuts to look great, you need to stay relevant to what’s trending. If there’s a cut that suits your client and is also well executed, but if its not fashionable, it won’t work. You must be proud to be part of this fashionable industry. Your finger needs to constantly be on the button with organic research. Keep a tab on what’s happening on ramps; it’s crucial for your personal growth. Also, if you’re relevant, your clients will keep coming back.
