Day 1 of the Modern Barber Challenge at Professional Beauty India Delhi 2026 opened the competition with three categories testing different aspects of barbering skill. Specifically, these ranged from rapid-fire fade work to full salon-ready haircuts and grooming transformations.

Express Fade

Jury: Prathamesh, Michael, Jay, Joel

The day’s competition began with Express Fade, a fast 20-minute round judged purely on fade execution. Competitors had to start the fade from skin or zero, with the top of the cut allowed to be pre-cut. As a result, the focus stayed entirely on the fade itself.

Judges scored entries on:

  • Speed
  • Fade precision
  • Blending
  • Symmetry
  • Clean finish

Notably, styling and top shape carried far less weight in this category. Overall, the format moved quickly: a 15-minute setup, the 20-minute competition window, and 15 minutes of judging immediately after.

The Modern Barber

Jury: Sahil, Joel, Michael, Prathamesh

Following a break, the competition moved into The Modern Barber, a 45-minute category built around a complete haircut, including the top. As with Express Fade, the fade had to start from skin or zero. However, this category demanded a more commercial, real-salon approach overall.

Judges evaluated:

  • Blend quality
  • Balance between top and sides
  • Shape
  • Texture
  • Styling
  • Wearability
  • Overall finish

Overall, this was a far broader scoring criteria than the earlier round. Similarly, the category ran with the same structure: setup, the 45-minute cutting window, and judging straight after.

Beard & Moustache

Jury: Vinu, Wazid, Uday, Sahil

After the lunch break, the day’s barbering competition closed with Beard & Moustache, a 40-minute category centred on significant transformation. Judges assessed the full look, including hair, beard, moustache, outfit, styling, and overall presentation, with no minimum length requirement for the beard or moustache itself.

Scoring focused on:

  • Transformation
  • Shape
  • Balance
  • Cohesion
  • Styling
  • Visual impact

As a result, this category rewarded competitors who could deliver a complete, cohesive look rather than just a clean trim.

Rules Across the Day

Throughout day one, competitors worked under a consistent set of guidelines:

  • Each competitor brought their own models and tools, with model consent treated as their own responsibility.
  • Styling products such as pomades, gels, and sprays were allowed, but hair colour, dyeing, hair fibres, wigs, extensions, and other artificial enhancements were off-limits across every category.
  • Cuts, nicks, razor burns, harsh tool usage, unsafe practices, and poor hygiene all led to negative marking.
  • Every competitor presented a mandatory mood board (phone, tablet, or printed up to A3 size), judged on vision, concept clarity, and how closely the final look matched the reference.
  • All competitors wore the official Modern Barber Challenge T-shirt, with no salon or brand references permitted on stage.

Overall, with Express Fade, The Modern Barber, and Beard & Moustache complete, day one wrapped up the first half of the Modern Barber Challenge. As a result, this set the stage for Creative Scissors and Hair Tattoo on day two.
