There are countless people worldwide who struggle with cancer. As the cases rise rapidly, especially among younger populations, raising awareness is more crucial than ever. In light of this, February 4 is observed as World Cancer Day. This is the story of a noble initiative by Shine Janarthanan to support those battling cancer.
Taking matters into their own hands, Shine Janarthanan, Founder and Director of The Time Machine Salon, has been running Cancer Day Drives for over a decade. Through this noble initiative, they have garnered support for those affected by cancer. Additionally, they have donated approximately INR 60 lakhs to Tata Memorial Hospital.
As Shine and the Salon continue their fight against cancer and the stigmas surrounding it, they remain committed to organizing drives that enhance awareness and support systems. This year was no different.

As Shine Janarthanan hopes that their initiative inspires more beauty professionals, salons, and brands to get involved, Priyanka Parshurami from Professional Beauty India spoke to her about the drive. Here’s an excerpt from the interview.

1. What inspired you to start this campaign, and how has it grown over five years?
“Our journey began with a heartfelt initiative to support cancer patients. Those who often lose not only their hair but also their self-confidence and dignity during treatment. Witnessing the emotional impact on our clients who came to shave their heads, we felt a deep responsibility to take action. Over the past five years, this campaign has grown tremendously, with increasing participation from generous donors, volunteers, and supporters. Today, we take immense pride in seeing a strong community come together to make a difference. It offers hope and encouragement to those battling cancer.”
2. Any memorable moments from past campaigns?
“We have had the privilege of serving many cancer survivors who return to our salon for services after completing their treatment. Their stories of resilience and strength inspire us every day. Seeing their joy and confidence restored through our initiative has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this campaign.”
3. How does Time Machine Salon support cancer awareness through this campaign?
“We host a three-day Cancer Donation Drive, during which we donate 100% of our salon revenue to support cancer patients. Every client who avails of a service during these three days contributes directly to the cause, making beauty not just about looking good but also about doing good.”
4. What are the highlights of this year’s three-day campaign?
“This year, we are focused on spreading more awareness by informing our clients about the Cancer Donation Drive. We are encouraging them to be a part of this initiative. We actively share details with every client who visits the salon, explaining how their support can make a difference. Through word-of-mouth, social media, and in-salon conversations, we ensured that more people are aware of the cause and motivated to contribute.”
5. What message do you have for the beauty community about supporting social causes?
“The beauty industry has the power to uplift, transform, and inspire. By supporting social causes, we go beyond aesthetics and make a real impact in people’s lives. We encourage everyone in the beauty community to use their skills and platforms to spread awareness, contribute to meaningful causes, and create a positive change in society.”
