10th December is observed as The World Digital Detox Day, a movement that has grown into a global revolution, spreading across 70 countries with 7.5 million offline supporters.
Launched by Dr. Rekha Chaudhari in 2016 in India, The World Digital Detox Day (WDDD) has achieved a remarkable milestone in raising awareness about the overuse of smartphones and social media. This initiative has now impacted 70 countries worldwide, with a staggering 7.5 million offline supporters. The 2024 edition of WDDD, held on 11th December, was hosted at the iconic Mantralaya ‘Vidhan Bhavan’ building in Mumbai.
The event highlighted the importance of fostering digital wellness and curbing excessive smartphone usage. It also offered solutions to enhance mental and social well-being. A significant step in this year’s initiative was advocating restrictions on social media usage for children under 16. It received tremendous global support.

In Mexico, Guadalajara, Jalisco, on Digital Detox Day, held a conference aimed at teachers, educational leaders, and parents. It aimed to raise awareness about the risks of digital addictions. Additionally, it spoke about the benefits of experiencing a childhood free from screens.

The program commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp by dignitaries. Next came the national anthem, a digital wellness pledge, and insights shared by Dr. Rekha Chaudhari, Founder of WDDD and Global Wellness Ambassador of India. Reflecting on the global impact of digital detox, she remarked, “Today, WDDD is celebrated in 70 countries, directly impacting 7.5 million people.”
The event included the felicitation of dignitaries, celebrities, and eminent personalities such as Pranav Misshra, Rick Roy, Apeksha Porwal, Sahil Salathia, and Jitin Gulati, among others. They emphasized the importance of digital detox, mental wellness, and advocating for a smartphone-free childhood.

Following the felicitation ceremony were three insightful panel discussions featuring industry experts, including:
- Mickey Mehta, Wellness Guru and Holistic Coach
- Darasing Khurana, Mental Health Awareness Advocate
- Dr. Utpal Chakraborty, AI Scientist and Quantum Innovator
The discussions revolved around critical topics such as:
- How digital detox aligns with physical and mental well-being across all age groups.
- Challenges in implementing smartphone restrictions for youth and potential solutions.
- The intersection of technology and wellness: finding balance in a tech-driven world.

As part of the event, Dr. Rekha Chaudhari launched a comic book titled “My Digital Detox Journey,” designed for children aged 3 to 8. The book aims to cultivate healthy habits for navigating the digital age effectively. Speaking about the book, she remarked,
“This initiative is an important step toward shaping a healthier digital future for children.”
The WDDD team also submitted a formal petition to the Chief Minister. It requested the imposition of restrictions on social media usage for children under 16. The foundation emphasized the urgency of promoting responsible technology use to ensure a safer, healthier future for society.

- Devidas Bhagure, Under Secretary of the General Administration Department, shared his personal approach to digital detox, stating,
“At my home, we use a ‘Digital Detox Box’ where mobile phones are placed upon entry, much like footwear.” - Ram Chatterjee, Country Director of Wellness, Six Senses Bhutan, advised,
“Reducing screen time and reconnecting with the real world is crucial. We’ve implemented simple SOPs for those who work long hours in front of screens, including physical and eye stretches, breathwork, and mindful meditation.” - Sushmita Sarangi, Commercial Director Jiva and Niu&Nau at IHCL said,
” It is so heartening to see the efforts and commitment of this group and the wellness industry at large for such a meaningful and relevant cause.”
The event concluded with participants pledging their commitment to digital wellness. Dr. Rekha Chaudhari extended heartfelt thanks to all the dignitaries, celebrities, and attendees for their support. She also expressed special gratitude to Maharashtra Tourism and the Health Ministry for their contributions.
