Zenoti & digital awakening of India’s beauty and wellness industry

Zenoti is transforming India’s beauty and wellness industry by merging touch with tech. It’s empowering salons and spas to streamline operations, delight customers, and scale profitably in an increasingly digital-first world. Sachin Kamat, General Manager for India, Middle East & South East Asia, Zenoti shines a light on the platform in a conversation with Vidhi Arya from Professional Beauty India.

The Indian beauty and wellness sector witnesses two stark realities as it’s thriving with salons, spas, med spas, and wellness centres sprouting in every neighbourhood, catering to a growing population that is more beauty-conscious than ever. While a part of the industry is increasingly adapting to digital solutions, a part is still surprisingly analogue. There are still salons where bookings happen over phone calls, records are scribbled in ledgers, and word-of-mouth drives far more business than digital presence.

“Eighty percent or slightly more of the industry is small, family-run, often with very thin margins,” explains Sachin Kamat,  General Manager for India, Middle East & South East Asia, Zenoti. “Somewhere people see spending on technology more as an expense rather than an investment. They’ll budget for rent, equipment, people, and running expenses, but not immediately for technology.”

This, Sachin points out, has long been the biggest roadblock to digitisation. “If you see technology as an expense, you will ask: how can I bring the cost down? If you see it as an investment, you will ask: how can I generate more return on this? And we believe technology can actually disruptively help you grow.”

The inevitability of digital

There was a time when digital adoption was considered optional. It was a choice for ambitious businesses wanting to scale faster. Today, Sachin says, it’s non-negotiable.

“Moving online is inevitable. Earlier it was if you wanted to flourish. But now even if you want to be in the reckoning, you need to be online. Digital is your storefront.”

The modern customer expects this. They want seamless online booking, instant digital payments, and the ability to review and be reviewed. “Before going anywhere, we check reviews,  not just the rating, but the most recent ones and even the bad ones,” Sachin points out. “Customers also value frictionless experiences. With a single button, you can book a service you’ve seen online. Once people get used to that, nobody wants to do it the previous way.”

Digital-first salons, he says, not only survive but thrive. “They get more appointments, they upsell and cross-sell with relevance, they receive feedback, and they build repeat customers. It becomes a virtuous cycle: higher bookings, higher average value per booking, higher retention.”

How Zenoti simplifies the complex

This is where Zenoti steps in. It bridges the gap between traditional businesses and modern consumer expectations.

“Zenoti is an all-in-one software,” Sachin explains. “Today, rather than using one vendor for bookings, another for WhatsApp, another for CRM, and another for social offers, Zenoti combines all of this into one single platform.”

This consolidation isn’t just about convenience; it’s also about security. “Most importantly, in today’s time when data is gold, none of your customer data ever leaves your system. Even when you run campaigns on social platforms, everything happens through integrations within the system. We are compliant with every data privacy norm across 55 countries. I don’t think anybody else in this space can say that.”

Zenoti’s value proposition, as Sachin outlines, touches every stakeholder:

  • For the customer: seamless booking, access to service history, reward points, favourite stylists, and before/after photos.
  • For the business owner: AI-driven dashboards that act “almost like having a data scientist work for you.” Owners can ask simple but powerful questions: How close am I to hitting this month’s target? Which customer segment should I focus on to generate X revenue in 10 days?
  • For the manager: a complete snapshot of the customer on one screen. “No more saying, ‘Let me check and get back to you.’ Everything is there, so any question that they ask, you will be able to answer like that.”
  • For the therapist or stylist: “They can check in a customer from their specific app right from the station. They can upsell or cross-sell, change or add services, take consent forms, and even upload before-after pictures. All stored in one place.”

“We solve for the customer, for the business owner, and for the manager and the therapist,” Sachin sums up. “And all the things you need to run your business are built into one suite.”

Tech will never replace touch

A common fear is that automation will eliminate jobs or replace the human touch. Sachin disagrees.

“The beautiful part is we are a service business. Touch and personal interaction are a big part of what we do. Technology can’t give you a haircut, can’t give you a facial, can’t give you a manicure. It can’t do creativity in that manner.”

Instead, Zenoti’s philosophy is simple: let people do what they do best. “The people on the floor should interact with customers and deliver services. Everything else, leave that to tech. Tech won’t get tired, it won’t make errors if exhausted, and it will run 24/7. So you use a combination of touch and tech, and that can only make you more powerful. It will never replace what you do.”

Upskilling and adoption

Does tech adoption mean salon staff need to be upskilled? Sachin believes it’s about mindset and speed of adoption.

“With any technology, anybody who’s fast to adopt and first to adopt will be the most benefited. But this is not new. We’ve gone from agriculture to industry to the knowledge industry, and still everybody has a job. It’s about finding newer ways to create value.”

He gives a striking analogy: “One person could make six pins a day when doing everything manually. But when the process was broken into specialized steps, production went from six to 120. That’s what technology does. It frees up time so you can achieve far more in far less time.”

The future of Zenoti

Zenoti’s ambition for its future is clear: to digitise every aspect of the beauty and wellness industry.

“We will make every salon, spa, med spa, wellness centre, and aesthetic clinic bookable, discoverable, and repeatable online. We will drive AI adoption further to give customers more personalised experiences. And we will make businesses far more predictable in how they can drive results.”

The company also sets itself apart by publishing benchmark reports. “Annually, we put together aggregate data, so we can tell you in any segment which businesses are performing above average and what they are doing differently. Built into our system is a dashboard that shows you in real time how much your business has grown using Zenoti features and how businesses like you are growing. It’s like saying: here’s your report card, and here’s your peer group’s report card. That’s a very unique offering.”

For entrepreneurs who often feel isolated, this becomes invaluable. “Entrepreneurship is very lonely. You’re always wondering: am I doing well? How is that next guy doing? With Zenoti, you don’t have to guess. The proof of the pudding is right there.”

A growth partner, not just software

Sachin leaves salon owners with one strong message:
“Technology has the capability to be disruptive in helping you grow. You must definitely consider it  as an investment, not as an expense. Zenoti is your growth partner. It streamlines operations, automates for greater efficiency, and more importantly, enables you to personalise and scale profitably.”
