The Shag Haircut

The shag haircut is a versatile, effortlessly chic style that has been a staple in hair trends for decades. Adding bangs to the look elevates it, making it edgier while still maintaining its laid-back charm. While it may seem like an intricate process, mastering this haircut is all about understanding the sectioning and cutting techniques involved.

This style works best on fine to medium-texture hair and is ideal for medium-length cuts. Before you begin, ensure you’ve assessed your client’s hair type and length to determine if this style will suit them.

Step-by-Step Guide to Achieve the Perfect Shag with Bangs

1. Removing the Centre Parting

Begin by removing the centre parting to create a blank canvas for your sectioning and cutting.

2. Isolate the Triangle Section

  • Isolate a triangle section 2 to 3 inches wide, depending on the hair’s density.
  • The section should extend from the front hairline to the recession on both sides.

3. Remove the Radial Parting

  • Create a radial parting that spans from ear to ear.

4. Isolate a Curved Section

  • From the radial section, isolate a curved section starting 2 to 3 inches below the crown and extending to the opposite side of the radial parting.

5. Establish the Perimeter Guide

  • Determine the perimeter length and establish your guide for the haircut.

6. Cut the Profile Section

  • Remove a profile section from the curved section removed earlier.
  • Elevate the profile section to 90 degrees from the head and cut it short to long.

7. Overdirect the Curved Section

  • Overdirect each section within the curved section to a stationary guide.
  • Follow the same cutting line as the one created in the profile section.

8. Shape the Front Section

  • Move to the front of the radial section.
  • Elevate the entire section perpendicular to the floor.
  • Cut square, using the shortest point of the curved section as your guide.
  • Repeat this process on the other side.

9. Cutting the Bangs

  • Take the triangle bang section and comb it down towards the face.
  • Twist the section 180 degrees and cut square, half to 1 inch below the eyebrows.

10. Refine with Diagonal Back Sections

  • Take a diagonal back section, starting 2 to 3 inches away from the front hairline and extending to the back of the ear.
  • Elevate the section straight out from the head.
  • Use the slice cutting technique to connect the shortest point to the longest.

Dos and Don’ts

Dos

  • This haircut is ideally suited for fine to medium hair texture and works with any hair type.
  • Medium-length hair is best for achieving this look.
  • The cut is easy to manage and style, making it a practical yet stylish choice.

Don’ts

  • Avoid attempting this style on thick, curly, or extremely straight hair.
  • Be mindful of jumpy hairlines that can disrupt the shape.
  • Don’t over-personalize the haircut—keep the look natural and seamless.
  • Ensure the bangs remain below the eyebrows for optimal style and functionality.
