On World Braille Day, The Body Shop reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity. The brand has announced its plans to expand The Body Shop’s Braille integration initiative across Activist Stores in India. Launched in 2024, this pioneering programme enables visually impaired customers to navigate beauty shopping more inclusively.
The Body Shop’s Braille initiative enhances accessibility for visually impaired customers. The programme has introduced Braille category call-outs in stores. It’s one of the steps through which the brand promotes inclusive beauty shopping.
The initiative is currently available in five stores across Mumbai, New Delhi, Gurgaon, and Bangalore. It will now expand to additional locations by the end of 2025. This move is part of The Body Shop’s approach to creating a fully inclusive shopping experience.
Harmeet Singh, Chief Brand Officer of The Body Shop-Asia South, described the initiative as a landmark moment for accessibility in India’s beauty retail sector, stating, “This first-of-its-kind move represents a milestone in accessibility and inclusivity in India’s beauty retail landscape.”
The Programme’s Debut
The programme debuted at the Activist Workshop store in Mumbai’s Palladium Mall as a surprise celebration of The Body Shop’s 18th anniversary in India. Virali Modi, a Disability Rights Activist and member of The Body Shop’s Youth Collective Council was the one who inspired this initiative. Since then, the initiative has grown, bolstered by positive feedback and strong community support.
What’s an Activist Store
Activist Stores embody The Body Shop’s ethos of sustainability and social change. The store fixtures are crafted from recycled materials, reclaimed wood, and 100% recycled worktops, reducing landfill waste. Additionally, the RRR (Return, Recycle, Repeat) programme allows customers to return packaging for easy recycling.
Beyond accessibility, The Body Shop champions diversity through initiatives like its Youth Collective Council. It focuses on sustainability, gender sensitivity, and inclusive hiring. Through these efforts and immersive workshops, the brand continues to lead the way in fostering a more inclusive beauty retail environment.
