Dear Men,

We know the havoc summer wrecks on your hair. Heat and humidity can take a toll on your hair and scalp, making them oily, sweaty and prone to dandruff. The scorching sun can dry out your strands, leading to frizz and split ends, while excessive sweating clogs your scalp, causing irritation. If you’re not careful, UV rays can also weaken your hair, making it brittle.

We got the award-winning men’s hairdresser Jim Shaw from the UK to divulge his summer haircare secrets, just for you. Read on to know more.

“As spring and summer approach, it is important that your hair is being looked after to ensure for the healthiest looking hair in the sun. Below are some of my tips on how to get your hair looking its best.

Scalp scrub

A clean refreshed scalp allows for a quicker turnover of cells, which leaves hair looking healthy and vibrant. Scalp scrubs remove excess oil and buildup that can be caused by hair tools and harsh products, ensuring refreshed hair and oil control for up to 48 hours.

The right routine

Understanding your hair is an important step for a healthy hair routine. Whether you have dry, oily, straight or curly hair, tailoring your routine to meet your hair’s needs will have you looking its best in the summer months. Using the correct shampoo and conditioner for your hair type will target what your hair needs, overall leaving your hair looking and feeling healthier.

Use SPF

An important step that a lot of us miss! Using a scalp SPF will keep your scalp protected from the suns UV rays, which can damage the scalp, leaving it red, itchy and flaky. This step can often be overlooked with many think that their hair will protect them from the sun, however, the scalp can be one of the first places to burn in the sun. Using SPF or keeping the head covered can help minimise this!

Lock in moisture

As the summer months approach, our hair can feel the effects of the weather, often leaving hair a lot dryer, meaning keeping locks loaded with moisture is vital. A hydrating shampoo and conditioner are a great addition to a summer routine, giving hair an extra quench. However, going one step further by introducing a hydrating mask to your routine once a week is going that extra mile to ensure your hair is staying hydrated.
