The caveman skincare is going viral, but should you try it?

While we understand a 10-step skincare routine is very ambitious for most, some choose to rebel with skinimalism. But, can you imagine ditching all your skincare, including cleanser? It’s not fiction, a girl has gone viral for her caveman skincare. Wondering what it is and if it’s worth trying, read closely as Vidhi Arya from Professional Beauty India decodes this.

Ditching skincare after a hectic day, just because one is tired, is common, but could you go on without any skincare or even facewash for days and weeks altogether? Sounds like a nightmare? Not for Tia Zakher! She went viral on TikTok for adopting caveman skincare. It’s a regime that suggests absolutely no skincare for her face, not even washing, not even with water.

Zakher stopped all skincare practices, including washing her face with water, nearly a month ago. According to her, she hasn’t used any cleanser, exfoliant, moisturiser, or even water on her face during this duration.

The 22-year-old suggests that this regimen will help her regain her skin’s natural state. With this, she aims to restore her skin’s natural barrier, which has been damaged by picking, over-exfoliating, and using various skincare products.

Is the caveman skincare actually good for the skin? Here’s our take!

According to Zakher, the rationale is: use of different skincare products can strip the skin’s natural oils, cause pH imbalance, and alter its natural chemistry. With this skincare, she aims to bring the skin back to its natural state.

But, dear readers, here is the catch. We do not recommend it. The caveman skincare is not safe and not worth a try. While it’s absolutely okay to skip tedious skincare regimes, or even skincare at all, it is never recommended to stop washing your face. In the long run, such practices are likely to do more harm than good. Continue to read as we tell you why.

What actually happens when you stop washing your face and stop using skincare?

The cons of not washing your face are more severe than you can imagine. Not washing your skin allows dirt and bacteria to build up on the skin. Eventually, the dirt and debris block the pores, leading to severe acne and skin ailments.

Additionally, not washing your face can also make the skin look unhealthy. It makes the pores noticeable and enlarged. Dirt on the face gives an uneven and dull appearance. Over time, it leads to quickened ageing and several skin problems.

For Zakher, she can be seen with a layer on her skin. While the internet is assuming it to be a fungal infection, she says it’s just dry skin that hasn’t shed.

What is the right approach?

The best approach when it comes to skincare is to seek balance. More than anything else, you have to observe your skin and listen to its needs. While those who are suffering skin problems might need a detailed and well-thought-out skincare regimen, those with fairly good skin can stick to the OG cleansing, toning, and moisturising.

Find appropriate products that work well for your skin type and concerns, and be consistent with your skincare routines. This clubbed with periodic salon visits is sure to benefit your skin in the long run than abandoning it completely. Also, remember that true glow comes from within, so eat well, stay hydrated, be active, and surely steer clear of trying everything you see on the internet.

Stay vigilant, stay beautiful!
