Habib Ahmed, the pioneering hairstylist who redefined Indian grooming, passed away on September 25, 2025, at the age of 84.

With Habib Ahmed’s passing, India loses not just a master of hair but a cultural icon who turned everyday grooming into a statement of power and identity.

Known for elevating hairstyling from a humble trade to a respected profession, Habib styled some of India’s most iconic personalities, including former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

“Today our industry lost a great man. Mr. Ahmed Habib is no longer with us. We will always remember his contributions and artistry to the hair, beauty, and cosmetics industry. Today the hair and beauty industry lost a great guru. He dedicated his life to this profession with artistry, dedication, and respect. He was the hairdresser to many great personalities, including Mrs. Indira Gandhi. On behalf of HBF India, we offer our heartfelt tributes. His name, his art, and his love will inspire us all,” says Hair & Beauty Federation, India and Hair & Beauty Organization Rajasthan as they express their grief and convey their condolences.

The legacy

Born on October 2, 1940, in Jalalabad near Muzaffarnagar, Habib Ahmed inherited a legacy of scissors and combs. His father, Nazir Ahmed, served as barber to the Viceroys of British India. He was later the personal stylist for India’s Presidents, beginning with Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Continuing this tradition of excellence, Habib trained in London at the renowned Morris School. He immersed himself in the sophisticated world of waves, curls, and setting lotions.

After honing his craft with the Oberoi Group in Delhi, he launched Habibs Hair & Beauty Salon in 1983 at the Lodi Hotel. This marked the start of an empire of salons and academies that transformed hairstyling into a modern career, attracting celebrities, politicians, and trendsetters.

Habib Ahmed’s artistry shaped Indira Gandhi’s unforgettable two-toned black-and-white hairstyle. It was a global symbol of strength and individuality. He also maintained Dr. Kalam’s signature silver locks. His vision and skill not only gave India some of its most memorable looks but also inspired a new generation of stylists, including his son, celebrity hairstylist Jawed Habib.

Professional Beauty India extends heartfelt condolences to the Habib family and wishes them strength and comfort as they navigate this loss.
