Animal-Free Safety Assessment Collaboration (AFSA) has launched a groundbreaking online Master Class. The AFSA master class is transforming how cosmetics and chemicals are tested, making animal-free safety science more accessible to scientists worldwide.
Since its debut in 2023, the course has attracted over 1,200 participants from nearly 70 countries. This reflects a growing global interest in ethical and innovative testing methods. The program, which consists of ten modules, features real-world case studies that guide scientists step-by-step through non-animal testing techniques. With the recent release of its final module, the course offers a comprehensive resource for “next-generation risk assessment.” It culminates in advanced methodologies like data integration to ensure robust consumer safety conclusions.
The course is a result of collaboration with industry leaders, regulatory experts, method developers, and animal protection advocates. AFSA Master Class serves as an educational foundation for implementing cutting-edge, cruelty-free practices. These methodologies eliminate the need for painful animal-based testing. They also provide more reliable and valid results regarding the safety of chemicals and products.
A Collaborative Effort for Ethical Science
The course’s development highlights the truly collaborative nature of this initiative. It involves regulators, product developers, contract research organisations, and academic professionals from across the globe. By uniting global expertise, the Master Class empowers participants to embrace kinder scientific practices. Ones that prioritise human safety while also protecting animals.
Dr. Catherine Willett, senior director of science and regulatory affairs at Humane Society International and principal coordinator of the program, emphasised the need for such a course. “Consumers and companies alike want to move away from painful and outdated animal tests, but learning more about the cutting-edge tools available in the animal-free toolbox, and how to use them to make safety decisions, can be challenging. The AFSA Master Class demystifies animal-free safety assessment, making it easier for companies to replace rats, rabbits, and guinea pigs with advanced non-animal models and computer simulations.”
Real-World Impact
The Master Class has already made a significant impact on its participants. Mark Broussard, managing partner of Desert in Bloom Cosmetics Lab, highlighted how the course aided his work. “The AFSA Master Class really helped me understand the entire process of determining the safety of a novel cosmetic ingredient using non-animal methods,” he shared. “I think the new approach methodologies will yield more valid, more reliable results on the safety of cosmetic ingredients without subjecting animals to painful animal-based testing procedures.”
Dr. Julia H. Fentem, EVP safety, environmental, and regulatory science at Unilever, reinforced the course’s importance, particularly for decision-making and regulatory safety assessments. “Our unique AFSA Master Class program is focused on the safety assessment of cosmetic products and ingredients without generating new animal data and covers all aspects of using non-animal tools and data,” she said.
Paving the Way for a Cruelty-Free Future
The AFSA Master Class provides key stakeholders with the tools and knowledge to explore animal-free methods. It goes on to contribute to the global shift toward cruelty-free safety science. By offering a comprehensive guide to non-animal testing, the course drives lasting change in the cosmetics and chemicals industries.
