Let’s hear more from Dina Umarova about her journey, latest trends, and the shape of nail education in India.

1. Can you share with our readers what motivated you to join the field of nail artistry education? How did your journey pan out?

I’ve always believed that beauty, in any form, is a powerful medium of self-expression. Nail artistry was a natural extension of that passion. When I first discovered the intricacies of this field, I was fascinated not only by the creative possibilities but also by the technical skill involved. My journey into nail artistry education began when I realised there was a lack of structured, professional training in India. I wanted to bring global standards here, which led to the founding of Bluesky Nail Academy. It’s been incredibly fulfilling to empower others and watch them evolve into skilled professionals.

2. Nail art trends evolve quickly. How do you stay on top of the latest global trends, and how do you incorporate them into your training programs?

Staying on top of trends is essential in this fast-paced industry. I’m always researching, attending international exhibitions, and connecting with global educators and brands to keep up with what’s next. At Bluesky Nail Academy, we make it a point to update our curriculum regularly. From Russian manicures to the latest gel extensions, we teach students not only the basics but also advanced, cutting-edge techniques. We integrate the newest trends with hands-on practice, ensuring that our students can offer modern, stylish services to their clients.

3. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during your journey in professional nail education in India, and how did you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges was changing the perception of nail artistry in India. Initially, it was seen more as a hobby or a side-skill rather than a serious profession. It took a lot of effort to highlight the global demand for nail services and the vast opportunities in this field. Another challenge was creating a structured curriculum that met international standards while also catering to the Indian market. Overcoming these obstacles involved educating both clients and aspiring nail artists about the professionalism and financial growth opportunities in this industry. Partnering with a trusted brand like Bluesky also added credibility, which helped build trust.

4. Can you share a standout moment or achievement from your 6-year journey that you’re particularly proud of?

One of the standout moments in my journey was when my students, who are now trainers at the Academy, won prizes at the Nailathon, a prestigious national-level competition for nails. Seeing them excel on such a prominent platform was incredibly fulfilling. Another proud milestone was being inducted as a jury member at the HBS Nailathon by Style Speak, as well as serving as a jury for Bluesky’s global online nail art contests.

Additionally, a moment which genuinely felt blessed and was an amazing reward of my hardwork, was being recognized as the Ambassador for Bluesky in the Asia-Pacific region was a huge honour, reinforcing the impact we’re making in the industry and inspiring me to continue elevating nail artistry education in India.

5. What do you consider the biggest advancements in nail education and technology during this period?

The most significant advancements have been in the development of safer, more durable products like gum gel and soft gel extensions. These have revolutionised the industry, offering clients longer-lasting and healthier options. In terms of education, the shift towards more specialised training has been crucial. Techniques like Russian manicures and detailed nail art were once niche, but now, they’re in demand. Incorporating these techniques into our curriculum has helped position Bluesky Nail Academy at the forefront of nail education in India.

6. What role does nail health play in your education, and how do you ensure that your students prioritize the care of natural nails during their services?

Nail health is non-negotiable. We teach our students the importance of nail anatomy and the correct use of products to ensure they don’t harm the natural nail. Techniques like proper filing, cuticle care, and the use of high-quality, non-toxic products are integral to our curriculum. We also emphasize that every client is different, and it’s important to assess their nails individually before deciding on any service. By prioritizing the health of the natural nails, we help our students build long-term relationships with their clients based on trust.

7. As the nail industry becomes more specialised, what future trends or innovations do you see shaping the direction of nail artistry in India, and how are you preparing your students for it?

I believe the future lies in hyper-personalisation and sustainability. Clients are looking for services that reflect their individual styles, and this will drive demand for bespoke nail art. On the sustainability front, there’s growing awareness around eco-friendly products. Bluesky is already ahead of the curve with our vegan and cruelty-free products, and we make sure to educate our students on using such options. In terms of innovation, I see an increase in hybrid services, combining nail art with wellness treatments, and we’re preparing our students by ensuring they are versatile and killed in multiple areas.

8. Do you have any tips or suggestions for newcomers in the industry?

Yes, I would say never stop learning. The beauty of this industry is that it’s constantly evolving, and to stay relevant, you have to keep upgrading your skills. Practice is key—perfecting your techniques will set you apart from the rest. Secondly, build strong client relationships. People appreciate genuine care, and when you prioritize their needs, they’ll stay loyal to you. Lastly, be patient. Success in nail artistry, like any profession, takes time, but if you’re passionate and persistent, you’ll see incredible results.
