Meta has announced that Instagram beauty filters will soon be discontinued. Read along to know its impact on users across the globe.

It’s time to embrace your natural beauty and take control of how you feel. For a long time now, Instagram filters have reshaped our perception of beauty. With nearly perfect skin, spot-on makeup, and impeccable hair that these filters showcase, insecurity has been on a rampant rise amongst the younger generation. Maybe not anymore! Meta has announced that Instagram beauty filters will soon be discontinued.

Meta has announced that Instagram will soon discontinue its Meta Spark Platform on January 14, 2025. Consequently, the move will impact Instagram users who rely on beauty filters for their content.

For far too long, filters have become a daily need for millions of Instagram users across the globe. Specifically talking of TikTok and Instagram beauty filters. These help many showcase flawless skin, perfectly done makeup, and envy-worthy hair. The portrayal one can achieve through them looks so authentic that the lines between digital and real are blurring. The result? As many are unable to differentiate between what’s real and what’s on reel, they are left feeling dejected and insecure. The definition of beauty is changing from ‘embracing our imperfections’ to ‘erasing our imperfections’.

Did you know, as per research, 87% of filters help in shrinking the user’s nose. Also, 90% help in enlarging the lips? Studies across the globe have suggested that these filters are causing mental health issues, especially in women and the younger generation. Degraded self-esteem, insecurity, eating disorders, and much more are arising out of the same. While the removal of these filters may be a step in the right direction, the question remains: are people ready to embrace their natural selves? Or, will they just move to other apps and platforms to still look perfect? That’s for all of us to wait and watch.

As for the decision, the company announced via its blog, “Following a thorough assessment, we have made the decision to shut down Meta Spark’s platform of third-party tools and content, effective Tuesday, January 14, 2025. This means that the Augmented Reality (AR) effects built by third parties—including brands and our wider community of AR Creators—will no longer be available beginning on this date. AR Effects owned by Meta will continue to be available to our users across our Family of Apps.

The company has promised to make the transition “as smooth as possible.” It has directed stakeholders to its FAQ page for updates and recommended actions.
